Blob banter

Those of you with jailbroken iPhone3G and ipt2G devices may now have noticed Cydia starting to save your SHSH blobs too, just like it does for iPhone3GS, ipt3G and later devices. That?s because starting with 4.0, Apple started putting a ?soft? SHSH blob check in the firmware. The SHSH blob check is very real in the sense that if iTunes can?t get your blobs (because the Apple signing window has closed), the iTunes restore will error out. But it?s ?soft? in the sense that those devices can always use redsn0w or PwnageTool to get past the error (the bootroms themselves for those devices don?t require blobs to be in the firmware files, unlike the newer bootroms).
Furthermore, since the 3.x IPSWs for these devices don?t enforce it, you can always restore to 3.x IPSWs outside of any signing windows.
So, Cydia is doing this to allow you to continue to use iTunes to restore to 4.x on iPhone3G and ipt2g outside of Apple?s signing window without needing to use redsn0w or PwnageTool to get around Apple?s annoying new restriction.

Fable 3 getting 'smartphone' tie-in game called 'Kingmaker'

Just the other day, I was talking about larger gaming companies using iPhone games to promote their major titles, and here you go: Microsoft and Lionhead Studios' Peter Molyneaux are set to introduce a "smartphone" game next week (presumably that means iPhone, although given that it's Microsoft, it might not be) that will tie-in to the upcoming Fable 3 release on the Xbox 360. The game will be called "Kingmaker," and it sounds like it'll be an augmented reality title, with UK players able to explore their real-world town and "plant virtual flags for the Royals or the Rebels." Every flag planted will earn in-game gold, and that gold will transfer over to the full console title when it is released later this year.

Unfortunately, there are still a few questions -- a release about the game only mentions the UK, and of course, that "smartphone" label means it might not be coming to the iPhone. But there's not long to wait, at least. The official site for the game says it's coming out on October 1st. We'll keep an eye on both the site and the game -- even if this doesn't end up being an iPhone title, there's no question that other developers will be watching to see how it works, and thinking about how they might use this strategy for their own titles.TUAWFable 3 getting 'smartphone' tie-in game called 'Kingmaker' originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 28 Sep 2010 19:30:00 EST. Xsilva LightSpeed Mobile brings Apple Store-like checkout to any store

Xsilva Systems has been at the forefront of Mac Point-of-Sale systems for a while with their LightSpeed software. Now, they're bringing another member of the Apple hardware family into the LightSpeed fold.

LightSpeed Mobile is designed to extend LightSpeed away from a traditional cash register, by using an iPod touch and Linea-Pro "sled" to scan bar codes and swipe credit cards from anywhere in the store. If this sounds familiar, it's because the hardware is the same that is currently used in Apple retail stores, although they use a proprietary app.

For existing LightSpeed customers, LightSpeed Mobile is an additional US$1,299 (iPod touch not included). Complete turnkey retail solutions that include the necessary software, the Linea-Pro scanner, and a full POS hardware kit (receipt printer, cash drawer, and bar code scanner) start at $3,649. If you already have the necessary hardware and software, you can purchase LightSpeed Mobile in the App Store for just $19.99.

A couple of fun videos showing LightSpeed Mobile in action follow on the next page.

Final Fantasy I and II on sale, ESPN app free, Real Racing on sale this weekend

Here's some good news about a few popular apps on the App Store:

Square Enix has dropped the price on retro titles Final Fantasy I and II. The games were originally released at $8.99, but to celebrate more widespread localization, the apps have dropped down to $3.99. Great games, nice price.
ESPN's Scorecenter XL app for the iPad has gone completely free. The app provides news and scores from around the sporting world -- it was $4.99, but the network has apparently decided to go free for good.
And Firemint is putting its Real Racing title on sale for the iPhone next week -- as of September 30, the app will be available for just $2.99. That's a rare occurrence for them -- it's the first time this game has ever gone on sale, probably because the title has been so popular. It offers a quality racing experience, with full Game Center integration.

All great deals on really popular apps. Apple's Q4 earnings call will take place Oct. 18

Can Apple continue the string of unprecedented financial success? Will the 4th quarter of 2010 (ending tomorrow, September 30th) be even more successful than the 3rd quarter, now that the iPad has had time to dominate the market for three more months and the iPhone 4 has overcome the negative "grip of death" publicity?

We'll all find out on October 18th, when Tim Cook, Steve Jobs, and a rogue's gallery of tech analysts bring us the 4th quarter earnings call for Apple Inc. As usual, TUAW will be providing a liveblog of the event, complete with commentary by our staff of bloggers. The event usually starts about 5 PM ET, and we'll be sure to give you a heads-up as the day approaches.

all four one!

Around an hour ago the new version of the iPhone Operating System (now called ?iOS?) was released.
iOS 4 is a huge release for Apple with many many changes and those changes offer slick additional features.
These new features are being offered by Apple as a free upgrade to qualifying devices.
We are working hard on a release to our tools that will jailbreak your device (or give you iOS 4 via the jailbreak train) and provide you with a carrier unlock.
Until these tools are released you should hold off on updating your device until we have fully tested our tools with all the relevant devices.
If you rely on hacktivation or a carrier unlock (ultrasn0w) then you should not upgrade until we have fully tested and released our tools.
Don?t be tempted with unofficial PwnageTool/redsn0w bundles or releases, just check here or our team twitter for real time release information.
Remember, we risk our devices so you don?t have to (but this time anyone who has made a mistake upgrading their baseband firmware should be OK real soon ;) Now! :)

Update #1: redsn0w beta has been updated to hacktivate iOS 4.0 for iPhone3G (in addition to jailbreaking the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G). The download links for redsn0w are:
Mac OSX (x86)
Windows
For now, theredsn0w beta release supports only the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G at today?s 4.0. It?s still a beta, so you?ll need to let Cydia reorganize, reload, and update after using redsn0w.
Update #2: There?s a new redsn0w beta (links were changed above) that should fix any iBooks problems people were seeing. Just run this new version 0.9.5b5-4 and deselect Cydia (you don?t want to reinstall Cydia over itself).
Update #3: Remember, there are scammers everywhere in the iPhone scene. The latest one involves something called ?ClawPack?. Avoid this costly, untested, and certainly unendorsed ripoff of our free software.
Update #4:There?s a new redsn0w beta (links were changed above) thatshould fix any APN or MMS issues that users were seeing. It?s safe to re-run it on an already jailbroken iPhone without restoring?just deselect ?Install Cydia? if you do that.

SHAttered iPod touch 4G

Those of you with Apple?s new iPod touch 4G, or those of you who bought another recent device after the jailbreakme.com exploit was closed, have probably heard about a brand new exploit called SHAtter. The exploit (and payload) was developed by @pod2g a few months after @p0sixninja of the Chronic Dev Team discovered the crash. That team is hard at work bringing you a brand new tool to make use of the exploit. It?s not the sort of thing that can be developed overnight so please be patient while waiting for any announcements from them.
In the meantime, we?ve put @pod2g?s exploit into a beta version of PwnageTool to test the waters. The SHAtter exploit was enough to convince the iPod touch 4G to restore to our custom IPSW. The successful result is shown below! It?s all working: customized Preferences to show battery percentage, Cydia, root shell?the works!

Although PwnageTool was a useful first test of a full iPod 4G jailbreak via SHAtter, it?s really overkill compared to the faster tools being developed. Its main use in PwnageTool will be for those with iPhone4?s, to allow updates while preserving the baseband and ultrasn0w carrier unlock. In any event, this is another exciting time for iPhone and iPod touch users?the cat and mouse game continues!
UPDATE #1: It?s looking like SHAtter is going to be the gift that keeps on giving. Even though the new AppleTV isn?t yet in people?s homes, the firmware is available on Apple?s normal public distribution servers and SHAtter has been used to decrypt its keys! The main filesystem (?Mojave8M89.K66OS?) key for 018-8609-066.dmg is:

If you?re familiar with vfdecrypt, you can use that key to decrypt the image and mount it. If you do so, feel free to use the comments section to discuss what you discover there :) (And of course, thanks @pod2g!)

Mac 101: Open new tabs to reveal browsing history in Safari

Safari's Top Sites feature is nifty and all, but what I've really wanted to do is have new Safari tabs open showing me my recent browsing history. I couldn't figure out a way to do this until just now. Maybe if you're an experienced Safari user this is obvious, but I'm still a fairly recent Safari adopter.
If you look in Safari's preferences, it will show that new tabs can be set to Top Sites, Home Page, Empty Page, Same Page, or Bookmarks. There's no "History" option. The good news is that you can work around this by choosing Bookmarks (as shown above), and then click on History (under Collections) at the top-left of the window.
Safari remembers what you had selected in the Bookmarks window, so whenever you open a new tab, it will open to the Bookmarks with the History selected. You could also do this by setting new tabs to open to an Empty Page, and then press Command+Option+2 (Show All History). If you find that key combination too awkward, as I do, you can reassign it in System Preferences under Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts.
Personally, I like this because I can use Command+T to open a new tab and have the history show up right away. I'd still prefer to be able to use the History view, which is shown if you start with Top Sites, and then click the History half of the button-tab at the top of that window, but this is the next best thing.TUAWMac 101: Open new tabs to reveal browsing history in Safari originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sun, 26 Sep 2010 09:00:00 EST. Apple taking mobile ad share from Google, Yahoo, should have 21% by year end

Apple's iAd service is a relative newcomer to the mobile ads industry, which is probably why it's completely falling apart. No, sorry Carol, we're kidding -- Apple's service is doing extremely well, and it's already threatening established mobile advertising services like Google and Yahoo!. IDC claims that Apple will end the year with 21 percent of the market, which means that in less than a year's time, the company will have picked up almost a quarter of a rapidly growing and expanding industry. Google's share is dropping, and that's in addition to the AdMob purchase it made a while back as well. That is a phenomenal start for the iAd platform.

And in fact, IDC is convinced that Apple's gigantic entry into the ads market has actually buoyed all ships -- even smaller advertisers like JumpTap and Millenial Media are growing, and even they cite Apple's entry into the industry as a marker for their popularity. Other cellphone and mobile platform creators are looking into their own advertising as well now, when before they would have just depended on a third-party service to run things for them.

And yet despite the incredible growth, Steve Jobs is probably disappointed -- he said earlier this year that he wanted Apple to oversee half of all mobile advertising by the time 2011 started. That's unlikely to happen, but still, a quarter of a market that Apple entered less than a year ago is nothing to sniff at.TUAWApple taking mobile ad share from Google, Yahoo, should have 21% by year end originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 27 Sep 2010 16:30:00 EST. Griffin's Woogie turns iPhone into a plush

When I was a kid, we just played with regular stuffed animals, and then Teddy Ruxpin came along and blew us all away. But kids these days, they get all kinds of cool stuff. Like look at this thing: they can stick an iPod touch in a "huggable plush accessory" called the Woogie, and run around with it to their heart's content, watching videos, playing with apps, and, I don't know, checking the weather, or whatever else it is that kids want to do on an iPod touch.

I especially like Griffin's selling point on this one -- this case is a bonus for the kids, who get a piece of technology that's a little more fluffy and friendly than Apple's sleek designs. It's a bonus for parents too, as it's much harder to lose or seriously break the iPod when it's wrapped in the big mass of furry green tentacles.

The $20 accessory even comes with its own app, where kids can preview Sesame Street books and, oh I don't know, check the weather or something. If I sound a little bitter, it's probably because I am: Teddy Ruxpin never ran Pocket Frogs for me.

New Yorker, Gourmet iPad apps debut

Two highly-anticipated iPad app releases have finally hit the App Store, and they're both magazines: The New Yorker and Gourmet Live.

The New Yorker (free for the app, US$4.99 per issue) joins Gourmet Live as the latest magazine apps from publisher Condé Nast. The navigation is simple: Tap anywhere on the screen to bring up the controls. You can quickly move between sections and articles with the scrubber or table of contents. For more leisurely reading, swipe between pages.

One unique feature is how the magazine's famous cartoons are handled. Tap anyone to bring up a scrollable cartoon gallery. Plus, you can enter the regular caption contest right from within the app. It looks great and we're eager to try it out.

Meanwhile, ill-fated Gourmet Magazine has been reborn as the iPad app Gourmet Live (the current issue is free; there's no word of future pricing). As John Gruber points out, Gourmet is now in the unique position of existing as an iPad app only. Its content is organized by topic and theme, and features recipes, slideshows, video and a lot more.

For now, there's no subscription option for either, but rumors suggest that could change soon. WIRED has come down in price since its introduction, but it remains to be seen if customers will embrace the per-issue pricing model. Other Condé Nast properties have transitioned to the iPad well, like WIRED, Epicurious and GQ.

Finally, Jason Schwartzman and Roman Coppola have produced a hilarious short film introducing The New Yorker's app. Check it out on the next page (Flash, sorry).

iPod nano built into Dreamcast VMU

I saw the new iPad nano for the first time this weekend, and though I knew it was small, of course, I was surprised by just how small it was. Despite the tiny little touchscreen, it really is about the size of the old shuffle. Small enough, in fact, to fit inside one of the old Visual Memory Units from the Sega Dreamcast. Unfortunately, the original controls don't work, and because the nano doesn't actually run any apps, you can't play anything even resembling the old VMU games that the extra controller units used to play in conjunction with the old console. But it is a nice little case for the new nano, and of course it's just dripping with nostalgia.

You can find more information and pictures on the maker's website, which is in Japanese. Don't be fooled by the Sega or Sonic pictures, either -- that's the just the nano's photos app showing off. Very cool, though -- I look forward to seeing even more places to install the nano's tiny little touchscreen.TUAWiPod nano built into Dreamcast VMU originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 27 Sep 2010 15:00:00 EST. Facebook Static FBML: Setting Up Your External CSS Stylesheet & Image Hosting with Google Sites

The recent problems with Internet Explorer 8 not rendering CSS styles when inlined on Static FBML tabs using the <style>...</style> tags has underscored the importance of using an external stylesheet — a separate text file with the extension ".css" that contains all your CSS style rules — to apply CSS to your tabs. Sonos introduces wireless dock for iPods and iPhones

Sonos has announced a new accessory for owners of the Sonos wireless music system. The Wireless Dock allows you to quickly connect an iPod or iPhone and access the music on it from any room in the house that has a Sonos ZonePlayer.
The device is a pretty clever idea that is a natural expansion of the existing Sonos brand. Of course, most people will have the music that is on their iPod or iPhone in their Sonos system already, but the device will allow visitors to plug in and access their own music, which makes it great for drop-ins or weekend guests. The music data on the device will not have to be indexed, so it really is just plugging it in and playing the music.
The dock will be released before the end of October, and sell for US $119.00. It works with the iPod touch (1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation), iPod classic, iPod nano (3rd, 4th, and 5th generation), iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, and iPhone, and it has been certified by the developer to meet Apple performance standards.
There are, of course, other ways to spread your music around the house (don't forget that iTunes now allows you to plug and play others' music as well), but Sonos owners will find this to be a quick and easy solution to integrating your portable iOS devices into an existing music system. We'll have a sample for testing soon and let you know how it does.

Ngmoco releases We City

Ngmoco has introduced its third title in the "We" series. We City arrives after We Rule and We Farm as the same kind of social simulation game. This time around, players will be building and creating their own cities, but other than the setting and the graphics, not too much has changed. Just like the other We titles, you can build farms to grow harvests (in this case, factories that build products), houses for citizens to give you rent, stores for your Plus+ friends to come and put orders in, and various types of decorations and custom items to paint your kingdom, sorry farm, sorry city as you see fit. What's called Mojo and Gro in the other two games is called Zap here, and it's available for the usual microtransactions, or some for free as you level up.

Colleges are the one big innovation here -- you can build colleges and universities to do research for you, and those bits of research can unlock new buildings and items. It's kind of a shame that Ngmoco didn't go too far off of the beaten path -- especially with NimbleBit's Pocket Frogs showing that you can do different (and really fun) things with freemium, it's disappointing to see another "We" game with only the names and graphics changed out.

But then again, I guess I can't blame them for going with what works. We City is available for free now on both the iPhone and the iPad. If you've played the other games, you know what you're in for, and if you've never seen Ngmoco's freemium model in action, here's your chance to check it out.TUAWNgmoco releases We City originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 19:00:00 EST. Students: You Are Probably Not Mark Zuckerberg, So Stay In School

Instead of another boring lecture, last week my students at UC-Berkeley got quite a treat: a lively discussion with TechCrunch founder Mike Arrington. I once described Mike as a cross between Oprah Winfrey and Howard Stern; so I was ready for a little controversy. But he ended up lighting such a big fire, that I?ve been bombarded with questions from students about their education and careers. The questions aren?t just coming from Berkeley; after the discussion was posted on TechCrunch, students at Duke asked me to discuss this at a keynote I am giving at their entrepreneurship symposium on Wednesday; and students at other schools, from as far as India and Singapore, have asked for advice. So I?ll just respond here in the hope of quenching this fire.

App Review: Send fantastical armies into battle with Ex Illis on your iPhone

(i)Pawn can turn your iPhone into a board game playing surface, but what if you want to expand your battles onto a much bigger playing field, one with mages and cavalry and archangels and big monsters? Then your best option is Ex illis, a new game that uses your iPhone or iPad as a game computer (technically, the "Rule Keeper software") while you act as general and overlord and maneuver your many pawns around the board. Armed with your painted miniatures and a copy of the software (also available for your Mac or PC), you and a friend can spend the afternoon

This is a fairly light miniatures game - it's not heavy like Warhammer or 40K, but it's way beyond Risk - and the software does a find job of making sure battles are won fair and square. For the rest of us, having the iPhone handle things is breezy and fun. One neat way this game is different from most board games is that your armies can gain strength and extra abilities over time. The web-based software keeps track of how your soldiers (or, ogres or whatever) are doing and gives them special powers depending on how they performed in battle. It's neat and engaging, but also gives big advantages to people who play a lot.

You can't build up your forces by playing against the computer, though, even in practice mode. You can sign up for two accounts and play against yourself to learn the rules, but the idea with Ex illlis is to play against a friend on the tabletop, not over the Internet or versus an AI. The investment to get started is pretty steep (the deluxe starter costs $159.95 while the basic version is $69.95 - each comes with 54 miniatures - and the booster packs of minis cost between $22.95 and $29.95. Hey, at least the iPhone app and the 30-day trial are free), but if you're ready to use your iPhone as a game calculator for your fantasy minis, Ex illis is a great way to go. Read on to figure out more about the world of Ex illis.

Dropbox updates iOS apps, announces App Directory

The Dropbox app for iPhone and iPad has been updated recently. There's a UI redesign in there now that takes full advantage of the Retina Display, so your shared files will look better than ever. The iPad version has gained a landscape view, and the app will now finish uploads and downloads in the background. Dropbox also allows file caching now, so once you've viewed a file, you won't have to go back and in and re-download it again. I presume that means only while the app is running -- if you have to actually close the app for any reason, you might have to connect up to see the file again. [Update: No, cached files remain accessible even without network access. -Ed.] But you can find out for yourself because the Dropbox app is free (as long as you sign up for a free account with their excellent service).

The company has also released something called the App Directory, which is an online database of iPhone and iPad apps that will work in conjunction with Dropbox and its file sharing capability. You can browse, review, and rate Dropbox compatible apps (and actually, Android, Blackberry, and Windows Mobile apps are included as well, if you happen to have one of those phones), and even follow links straight from the listings to download and use whatever apps you need. If you save a lot of things on your Dropbox account, you might want to take a look through there. There's standard stuff like GoodReader and Documents to Go, but odds are that, even if you've found another use for sharing on Dropbox, there's probably an app to help you do it.

Note: Please don't put Dropbox referral links in the comments. They will be deleted, and repeat offenders will be banned.TUAWDropbox updates iOS apps, announces App Directory originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 07:00:00 EST. A week after announcing the acquisition of U.S. mobile social gaming studio, Gameview, Japanese gaming giant DeNA is making a strategic investment in another U.S. gaming company, social game studio Astro Ape. The investment amount was not disclosed by the companies.

Based in Edison, N.J., Astro Ape creates social game titles for the iOS platform, including Office Heroes, an iPhone app simulating a game within the corporate world. As part of the investment, Astro Ape will develop titles for DeNA's MiniNation mobile platform, DeNA?s subsidiary in the smartphone market.

TUAW's Daily App: Glee Karaoke

Smule has reinvented its official Glee app as Glee Karaoke, specially for the new season of the musical show. Our own Mike Rose enjoyed the first app earlier this year, but this release adds a little competition to the mix -- you can now compete on high score boards for every song, and complete missions in the game to unlock new content and move up the charts. You can also improve your singing by playing with the app -- there's "a touch of pitch correction" in there, and you can get feedback as you sing on just how well you're doing.

The app is cheaper than before, too (just US $0.99 for the original purchase). Songs still have to be purchased separately, but every week, Smule is adding new songs into the mix, so you can keep up with the show during the season.

I have to admit, Smule has been pretty innovative with music on the App Store, and this latest app revamp is no exception. For Glee fans, it's a must, but anyone who enjoys belting out their favorite lyrics should definitely check this one out.TUAWTUAW's Daily App: Glee Karaoke originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 08:00:00 EST. Apple patent application reveals tiny audio jacks

Apple's developers have been shrinking the iPod with nearly every update, yet they aren't done. This week, AppleInsider has discovered a patent application that reveals even smaller audio jacks that could be used in future, tinier iPods. To understand how, we must discuss pogo pins and cantilever beams.

Contemporary audio jacks use cantilever beams, which extend into the cavity of the jack itself, and are pushed out of the way when a plug is inserted. The beams then make contact with the plug and allow data, audio, and power to be transferred. They also take up a decent amount of space; too much in Apple's opinion.

The patent mentions pogo pins, which are embedded into the cavity and extend to make contact with an inserted plug. Furthermore, the patent claims that pogo pins would "greatly reduce" the size of the audio jack "in two dimensions." Consider that the current iPod shuffle is essentially the width of its jack, and you see how it's become a limiting factor.

Do we want these things to get smaller? The shuffle already feels like a postage stamp.

As the only one in the group utilizing social media as the sole form of communications for clients, my portion of the conversation would seemingly be the shortest of [...]Corporate Blogging for Dummies is now available on Amazon and in book stores. On Tuesday, Apple released firmware 3.1.3 for the iPhone and iPod touches. Unless you?ve personally observed a problem with the reporting of your battery percentage, there?s no reason to update to 3.1.3. We know some of you will want to anyway. Superbowl Sunday?s PwnageTool 3.1.5 for Mac OS X will let you do so safely, preserving your jailbreak and ultrasn0w unlock. (If you use the blacksn0w unlock (at baseband 05.11.07), you need to stay at 3.1.2.)
iPhone 3G and 3GS unlockers should always be very wary to update their firmware. This is no exception. If you make a mistake along the way you may find yourself updating to official 3.1.3 in which case you will lose your unlock, possibly forever.
iPhone 3GS users (regardless of unlock) should stay away from this and all 3.1.3 jailbreak tools unless you know you have your ?SHSH hashes? backed up via Cydia. That?s because if you make a mistake you may find yourself stuck at official 3.1.3 with no way to jailbreak or come back down to 3.1.2 to jailbreak.
If you really truly feel that you need to update, this version creates a custom 3.1.3 IPSW for you to restore to on your iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS with early bootrom, iPod touch 1G, and iPod touch 2G with early bootrom. If you don?t know if you have an early bootrom or not, please avoid updating until you learn more.
You don?t need to be pre-jailbroken on anything but the iPod touch 2G early bootrom. And really for that device, it?s faster and easier to use redsn0w 0.9.4 as mentioned in our last post. For that matter, if you have an ipt1g, iphone2g, or iphone3g(and don?t need an unlock), you should use redsn0w too (but version 0.9.3). It?s faster and you won?t have to go through a full restore process (just do an update then run redsn0w, pointing it at 3.1.2 FW instead of 3.1.3).
If you have an iPhone 3GS: PwnageTool works if you?re currently at version 3.1.2 or below (down to 3.0) and if you know you have a old bootrom. You don?t need to be already jailbroken ? PwnageTool will ask you if you?re jailbroken after you?ve created the IPSW. Don?t use PwnageTool unless you know for sure you have an old bootrom (if you?re not sure, assume the worst and don?t use it). Don?t use PwnageTool on the iPhone 3GS if you?re at 3.1.3, it just won?t work. Downgrade to 3.1.2 using the methods described here. If you can?t downgrade because you don?t have your 3GS 3.1.2 hashes on file with Cydia, you?ll need to sit out the 3.1.3 jailbreak.
We aren?t revealing any new exploits to Apple with this jailbreak. Everything here has been used before, it?s just a straightforward port of Pwnage2 and 24Kpwn to the new firmware. It?s possible the new firmware was released largely to flush out new exploits before the next big release. We won?t be biting.
We?d really like the above warnings and disclaimers to sink in.Please don?t download the files below and use them blindly.
