East Coast Blizzard Could Boost Online Spending While Brick And Mortar Stores Suffer

By now many of you may have heard about the massive blizzard that is hitting the Northeast region of the United States over the next few days, bringing as much as two feet of snow to some areas. This, of course, is bad news for brick and mortar retailers, who have been advertising after-Christmas sales for some time now. The post-holiday shopping period has become as popular for massive discounts and sales for both online retailers and in-stores, similar to the period after Thanksgiving. The NPD Group's retail analyst Marshal Cohen said today that it will take two to three weeks longer for retailers to recover from the loss of sales thanks to the snowstorm. He adds that with next weekend marking New Year's day, more consumers are likely to be distracted from in-store shopping, also possibly causing a loss in sales.

The silver lining to all of this is that online retailers could see a significant boost in sales thanks to the snowstorm. Home-bound consumers who are still looking for post-holiday deals can access them on retailers online sites or on e-commerce platforms like Amazon or eBay.

WITN: The Dumbest and Smartest People of 2010, Plus Our Predictions for 2011 (TCTV)

With apologies to Car Talk, you've squandered a perfectly good half-of-a-year watching "Why Is This News?" and we decided to reward you with a show that actually contains business analysis, rather than a rant about hotels or the hijinks of Michael Arrington.

In this week's episode Paul and Sarah give their picks for the dumbest and smartest people of 2010, a slam-dunk prediction for 2011 and a Hail Mary prediction for 2011. We know you'll remind us of the ones we forgot in the comments.

The downside of doing a year-end episode is it's filmed without the help of TCTV's crack editing team. Forgive a few rough transitions, but we wanted to keep this episode short....well, short for us. We know you people have family to hug, Holiday dinners to eat and presents to unwrap.

Limera1n surprise

After a few very dramatic days in the jailbreak community, geohot has come out of nowhere to release limera1n. It?s a bootrom-level jailbreak that works on the iPhone3GS, iPhone4, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G, the iPad, and (technically) the AppleTV 2G.
DO NOT USE LIMERA1N IF YOU USE THE ULTRASN0W CARRIER UNLOCK ? wait for PwnageTool to incorporate the limera1n exploit. This is so that you can avoid updating your baseband and losing the unlock (possibly forever).
Limera1n uses a different exploit than SHAtter, and in fact covers more devices. Although some may question geohot?s dramatic and competitive style, he obviously does have considerable skill pulling this together in just over a day (although he?s had the underlying exploit for months). Credit also goes to @comex, who provides the untethered aspect of limera1n via another one of his growing list of kernel hacks.
The release of limera1n has (thankfully!) averted the burning of 2 bootrom holes at once (both his and SHAtter). Releasing SHAtter now would be a complete waste of a perfectly good bootrom hole in light of limera1n, and so it can be held until Apple closes limera1n?s hole. While there?s no guarantee that Apple won?t also close SHAtter by then, it provides a ray of hope for devices after Apple?s bootrom respin.
Update #1: Because the ?untethered? part of this jailbreak comes from a userland hack from @comex, you should still backup your SHSH hashes for 4.1. Do this by either letting Cydia keep them (?make my life easier?), or using Tiny Umbrella. This way you can always come back to an untethered, jailbreakable 4.1 on your devices after Apple has closed their 4.1 signing window (they?ll close the 4.1 window once they push out their next firmware version). If you fail to do this and ever need to restore to 4.1 again, you can still jailbreak but it will be a tethered JB (you?ll need to connect to your computer to finish the booting process, each and every time).
And remember: you can backup your 4.1 SHSH hashes without even being at 4.1 or even being jailbroken, by using Tiny Umbrella.

Winning moves

Jailbreakme v2.0 was a great success, and it?s provided a nice leveling point for all jailbreakers and unlockers on all devices at firmware versions less than 4.0.2/3.2.2. We hope that everybody ever interested in jailbreaks or unlocks was able to join in on the jailbreakme bonanza. Those of you who had Cydia capture your SHSH blobs, or those of you who captured them locally, will always be able to benefit from the jailbreakme.com v2.0 release. Congratulations!
Now it?s a few weeks later, and Apple has closed the jailbreakme.com hole. They?re shipping devices with FW 4.0.2/3.2.2, impervious to this particular jailbreak. So now, people will begin to ask: will there be a jailbreak for devices that shipped with 4.0.2/3.2.2, out of the box?
No, there won?t be. FW 4.0.2/3.2.2 was *only* released to fix the jailbreakme hole. With FW 4.1 still in its beta stages, it makes no sense to escalate the ?cat & mouse? with Apple for FW updates that only fix the jailbreak holes. To quote WOPR, ?the only winning move is not to play?.

If the cat & mouse game escalates too quickly, especially during beta FW periods, nobody but Apple benefits. For this reason, there won?t be a 4.0.2/3.2.2 jailbreak specifically during the period where 4.0.2/3.2.2 is the latest public release. At best, some future 4.1x FW jailbreak *may* be compatible with 4.0.2/3.2.2 (but don?t count on that).
If any of this is confusing, please ask below in our comments section!
P.S.: For those of you with iPhone3G or iPod Touch 2G(not MC version), it?s true you can always use redsn0w to jailbreak your 4.x devices. Don?t let that dilute the above message, though :)

A Word On Commercial Themes

James Dalman gave his prediction for the future of the premium theme business on WPCandy yesterday and although he makes a couple of valid points, there are some others I’d like to expand upon as well as add my own thoughts. First, a little history on the semantics of the market. The word Premium was a term used about two years ago to define a theme that carried a price tag and contained some additional features and enhancements you wouldn’t normally find in a free theme. This lead to the question, What Is A Premium Theme? Premium was and always has been a marketing term. It’s funny because in the commercial theme market today, the rage is centered around theme frameworks. While theme developers in the WordPress community grabbed a hold of this term and gave it their own definition, we once again found ourselves wondering what a theme framework [...]

Hyper Facts for iOS: A powerful and fun database query app

It's amazing what you can find with your iOS device. With the whole internet in your hands, vast databases are yours to explore with a couple of taps.
Hyper Facts is a new way to more easily manage these searches, and overall it works pretty well. You type in a search term, a name, or an event (like a historical event) and off goes the app to do a search. The app searches 4 different databases, although the ones used aren't specified, and there are also links to Wikipedia.
If you click the 'nearby' icon, the app gets your location via GPS and tells you interesting things around you, with links to articles.

Blob banter

Those of you with jailbroken iPhone3G and ipt2G devices may now have noticed Cydia starting to save your SHSH blobs too, just like it does for iPhone3GS, ipt3G and later devices. That?s because starting with 4.0, Apple started putting a ?soft? SHSH blob check in the firmware. The SHSH blob check is very real in the sense that if iTunes can?t get your blobs (because the Apple signing window has closed), the iTunes restore will error out. But it?s ?soft? in the sense that those devices can always use redsn0w or PwnageTool to get past the error (the bootroms themselves for those devices don?t require blobs to be in the firmware files, unlike the newer bootroms).
Furthermore, since the 3.x IPSWs for these devices don?t enforce it, you can always restore to 3.x IPSWs outside of any signing windows.
So, Cydia is doing this to allow you to continue to use iTunes to restore to 4.x on iPhone3G and ipt2g outside of Apple?s signing window without needing to use redsn0w or PwnageTool to get around Apple?s annoying new restriction.

In the comments of that post however, Latz brings up an interesting point. Oh great, now every plugin will put a menu in the admin bar, Next stop: a plugin preventing others from cluttering the admin bar. While it’s pretty funny to think about the admin bar containing menus for all sorts of different plugins, it’s a potential problem that users may have to deal with in the future. Hopefully, plugin authors are diligent with not adding a menu to their options page as part of the default package of a plugin. For certain plugins, [...]

Flipboard for Mac screenshot fake, real thing still in the works

A leaked Photoshopped screenshot that was supposedly of a new Flipboard for Mac found its way into many email inboxes yesterday, and now 9 to 5 Mac has confirmation that it is indeed a fake and not from Flipboard Inc. at all. While our own Steven Sande recently wrote about the possibility of Flipboard coming to the Mac soon, in talking to 9 to 5 Mac, the company had this to say:

"We definitely believe the desktop is part of our future, but it's still on the whiteboard and not something we are launching soon. The desktop requires a lot of attention to design and UI and we'd like to take the time to get it right."

So if you happened to see and believe the "screenshot" of Flipboard for Mac, sorry to burst your bubble. It is still available for free on the App Store to those of you with iPads, and I recommend you check it out. It's a different way of reading news, looking at pictures and responding to updates on Facebook and Twitter, and we can only hope that the Mac version comes out soon enough. Since Apple named it the iPad App of the Year, I imagine we won't have to wait too long.Flipboard for Mac screenshot fake, real thing still in the works originally appeared on TUAW on Wed, 22 Dec 2010 17:30:00 EST. Alcatel-Lucent trust sues Apple and others over video patents

Apple has been hit with yet another patent infringement lawsuit this week. The lawsuit was filed on Monday in the U.S. District Court for Southern California by the Multimedia Patent Trust. The MPT is a subsidiary of Alcatel-Lucent that was formed when Alcatel merged with Lucent Technologies in 2006. The MPT controls and defends a block of patents previously owned by Lucent. The company has a litigious history and has filed infringement lawsuits against Microsoft, Dell, Disney and DirecTV.

The four patents listed in this infringement case focus on video codecs with Apple allegedly infringing on three of the four patents. Cited in the complaint are Apple's MacBook lineup of laptops, the iPhone and its video editing solution, Final Cut Pro. Apple is not alone in this lawsuit; Canon cameras and camcorders, LG mobile phones and TiVo DVR equipment are also being targeted by MPT. MPT is asking for past royalty payments from these alleged infringing products and, at least for Apple, is not seeking an injunction.Alcatel-Lucent trust sues Apple and others over video patents originally appeared on TUAW on Thu, 23 Dec 2010 10:00:00 EST. Skype CEO Will Offer Users Credits For Outage; Does Not Rule Out Malicious Attack

Skype is still recovering from its massive outage yesterday, but it is getting back to normal. Instant messages still seem to have a delay (anecdotally, I am noticing that I hear the IM ping, but then it is hit or miss whether any message comes through), but voice calls are working fine. I know because I just spoke with CEO Tony Bates over Skype. He estimates that between 16 million and 17 million Skype users, or about 80 percent of the people who would be on the service right now, can use it. "We are bringing folks back on in a controlled manner," he says.

Bates priority is to get the service back up and running and to make sure Skype does not lose the trust of its users. To rectify that, he is publicly apologizing to them for the downtime and will offer users some sort of credits, with more details on that coming out later today. (Yes, free calls!) This is the right approach, and reminds me of what Netflix does when its streaming movie service goes down (free movies).

Apple updates iOS Remote app to version 2.1

An update to Apple's popular Remote application just went live on the App Store. Version 2.1 brings several new features to the table including AirPlay video support and Internet radio control. I'm not entirely sure what Apple is getting at with their "AirPlay video support to control iTunes on your computer to stream videos to an Apple TV" feature. It sounds a little Rube Goldberg, but I look forward to giving it a spin.

Here's a complete list of the new 2.1 features, courtesy of Apple:

AirPlay video support to control iTunes on your computer to stream videos to an Apple TV
Internet radio control to play thousands of internet radio streams in iTunes on your computer
The ability to control iTunes on your computer to play Movies and TV shows that are rented from the iTunes Store
Addresses issues connecting to an iTunes library or Apple TV
Includes stability and performance improvements

TUAW's Holiday Gift Guide: Crafts with the kids

Welcome to the TUAW Holiday Gift Guide! We've sorted the treasure from the junk and are serving up suggestions to make your holiday gift-giving a little easier.

The best holiday helpers are often the ones you already have right at home. Here are some ideas for last minute creations that are fun to put together with your kids.

Whether they involve putting together an iPad Moose costume (made out of felt, popsicle sticks, and rubber bands) or building a holder for iAccessories, child-made gifts don't have to be perfect or usable in the long term. They just have to be made with love.

Here's a gallery to give you some ideas as a jumping-off point. But don't feel limited by what you see here. Macaroni, glitter glue, pipe cleaners and felt offer a range of expression unlimited except by imagination.

Students at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs were warned by a State Department employee this week that discussing the controversial secret leaking website WikiLeaks on Facebook or Twitter could bar them from future employment options. all four one!

Around an hour ago the new version of the iPhone Operating System (now called ?iOS?) was released.
iOS 4 is a huge release for Apple with many many changes and those changes offer slick additional features.
These new features are being offered by Apple as a free upgrade to qualifying devices.
We are working hard on a release to our tools that will jailbreak your device (or give you iOS 4 via the jailbreak train) and provide you with a carrier unlock.
Until these tools are released you should hold off on updating your device until we have fully tested our tools with all the relevant devices.
If you rely on hacktivation or a carrier unlock (ultrasn0w) then you should not upgrade until we have fully tested and released our tools.
Don?t be tempted with unofficial PwnageTool/redsn0w bundles or releases, just check here or our team twitter for real time release information.
Remember, we risk our devices so you don?t have to (but this time anyone who has made a mistake upgrading their baseband firmware should be OK real soon ;) Now! :)

Update #1: redsn0w beta has been updated to hacktivate iOS 4.0 for iPhone3G (in addition to jailbreaking the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G). The download links for redsn0w are:
Mac OSX (x86)
Windows
For now, theredsn0w beta release supports only the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G at today?s 4.0. It?s still a beta, so you?ll need to let Cydia reorganize, reload, and update after using redsn0w.
Update #2: There?s a new redsn0w beta (links were changed above) that should fix any iBooks problems people were seeing. Just run this new version 0.9.5b5-4 and deselect Cydia (you don?t want to reinstall Cydia over itself).
Update #3: Remember, there are scammers everywhere in the iPhone scene. The latest one involves something called ?ClawPack?. Avoid this costly, untested, and certainly unendorsed ripoff of our free software.
Update #4:There?s a new redsn0w beta (links were changed above) thatshould fix any APN or MMS issues that users were seeing. It?s safe to re-run it on an already jailbroken iPhone without restoring?just deselect ?Install Cydia? if you do that.

Apparently Twitter is talking tough to a third party app on Android who apparently is violating Twitter’s trademarked name. TUAW's Daily App: Secret of Mana

Here we go. A few of the hack-and-slash RPGs we've covered in this space have been compared to Secret of Mana, but now Square Enix has gone ahead and released the actual thing on iOS. Secret of Mana borrows a little bit from Legend of Zelda in that you always see all of your enemies on screen, and hack away at them in real time rather than in a turn-based battle or a separate mode.

Otherwise it's a JRPG all the way around, as you wander through towns and dungeons, level up and earn weapons of various powers, and explore a big story of an unexpected hero saving the world. This is a good one -- it's a little retro, considering it first came out back in 1993, but it's a great title.

The only drawback? It's been released at US$8.99 on the iPhone, and while it's probably worth the price to some of you, most of the App Store market (especially this week, after so many big titles and so many sales already) will probably find it a little too rich for their wallet. If that's a little high, just wait -- Square Enix has done more than a few sales in its time, so we might see it a little cheaper sooner or later.TUAW's Daily App: Secret of Mana originally appeared on TUAW on Thu, 23 Dec 2010 08:00:00 EST. PwnageTool 4.0 Release Info
PwnageTool 4.01 Release Info (UPDATED TO V 4.01)
On Monday, Apple released firmware 4.0 for the iPhone and iPod touch devices. This of course was a major upgrade.
As advised, you shouldn?t have upgraded your devices if you have previously relied on our tools for hacktivation and/or a carrier unlock.
With that said, today we are releasing PwnageTool 4.0PwnageTool 4.01
PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE POST CAREFULLY, THERE ARE KNOWN UPGRADE TRAPS AND DIFFERENT UPGRADE SCENARIOS THAT NEED TO BE FULLY UNDERSTOOD AND CONSIDERED BEFORE USING THESE TOOLS.
Each supported device has few different scenarios that users need to consider when performing the upgrades, you need to check below and perform the upgrade in the particular way that matches your current device state.
NB: With PwnageTool 4.0PwnageTool 4.01 certain devices are not supportedthis is because they are not supported in iOS 4.0 or they are not supported by our software. We?re working on ways to get past these restrictions.
iPhone 2G - not supported
iPod Touch - not supported
iPod Touch 3G - not supported
PwnageTool 4.0PwnageTool 4.01only recognizes the official IPSWs that came out yesterday. If you had developer access to the ?4.0 GM? IPSWs, do not try to use those.
iPhone 3GS
Summary: Currently, PwnageTool only works on previously jailbroken 3GS devices with the old bootrom.
If you have a Jailbroken iPhone 3GS with the OLD BOOTROM and you DID NOT use Spirit to jailbreak then you can create the ipsw with PwnageTool 4.0 and restore with your jailbroken recovery mode.
If you have an iPhone 3GS with the NEW BOOTROM this is NOT supported by PwnageTool 4.0PwnageTool 4.01
iPhone 3G
If you have a Jailbroken iPhone 3G at 3.1.2 (but not jailbroken with Spirit) then you should create the ipsw with PwnageTool 4.01 and restore from recovery mode or DFU mode.
If you have an out of the box iPhone 3G you should restore using a PwnageTool 4.01 ipsw using DFU mode.
If you have a Jailbroken 3.1.3 iPhone 3G it is very possible that this can fail from recovery mode, if this failure happens you will need to restore using DFU mode.
As an alternative to PwnageTool, you can use redsn0w on iPhone 3G (on both Windows and Mac) as mentioned in our last post.
IMPORTANT!Whenever you need to enter DFU mode, you will need to do so using PwnageTool.
iPod touch 2G
If you have an iPod touch 2G (non-MC model) that is jailbroken (but not with Spirit) then you can restore using recovery mode.
As an alternative to PwnageTool, you can use redsn0w on non-MC iPod Touch 2G (on both Windows and Mac) as mentioned in our last post.
Baseband Unlock
As you probably know by now, ultrasn0w has been updated to cover all basebands from 04.26.08 onward. Many thanks to @sherif_hashim for finding the crashing command that the new ultrasn0w 0.93 uses! He worked hard at finding the crash, and he kept it confidential until the right time to use it.
Major props to @oranav (who found the earlier +xlog crash). He also had this crashing command!
iPhone 3G and 3GS baseband unlockers (those who rely on ultrasn0w to make phone calls) should always be very wary to update their firmware, however our Ultrasn0w application will unlock all recent (including the current) 3GS and 3G baseband firmware versions. Once you are jailbroken using PwnageTool 4.01, install ultrasn0w from Cydia and you?ll be unlocked.
Remember! This baseband unlock situation is rare, should you upgrade your iPhone blindly at the next iOS release please don?t expect an unlock - but for now you are OK (whatever state your baseband is in).
Please feel free to ask any questions in the comment section below. We?ve got a bunch of expert help there, including our friendly moderators confucious and angie!

Make a free Apple-oriented Christmas Creche

If you've got a bit of time on your hands before Christmas (yeah, that could happen), you might want to build a Christmas Creche using a bunch of Apple favorites and pundits to witness the birth of the iPad. Our Dutch friends at One More Thing have put together a free print, cut and glue kit, where you can download all that you need to build your very own version of the Apple nativity scene. If you know your way around a pair of scissors, you can probably construct it in about an hour.

The cast of characters include: Steve Jobs and a segway-riding Steve Wozniak as Joseph and Mary, Jonathan Ive, Tim Cook and Phil Schiller as the shepherds, and three pundits -- David Pogue, Walt Mossberg and John Gruber -- as the three wise men. Interesting choices there. It looks like Pogue is announcing the miracle using FaceTime.

Take a look after the break for a quick video on how it all goes together.

Where Is Awarded The ?Mother Of All Geofencing Patents?

Just as geo mobile services are taking off, the U.S. Patent Office has awarded an extremely broad patent on "Location-based services" to Where. Patent No. 7,848,765 covers 31 claims ranging from sending an alert to offering a coupon when somebody crosses a geofence with a mobile device. Where CEO Walter Doyle calls it the "mother of all geofencing patents."

A geofence is a predefined boundary on a map. For instance, it could be a two-block radius around a business. When somebody crosses into that area, they could be offered a geo-targeted ad or coupon. The patent also defines a geofence as possibly being "associated with a moving location that is associated with a portable electronic device." In this case, the geofence is placed around individual users and moves with them. The patent seems to describe practically every mobile app with any kind of geo-trigger, from simple "location-based alerts" to "verifying transactions and tailoring information to the behavior of a user."

Will Anonymous attack Apple?

Could the Internet-driven Anonymous movement possibly bring its DDOS attacks to bear on our favorite Cupertino company? Apple did remove the WikiLeaks application, after all. Not that you can't still access WikiLeaks on the web, but Apple has got to be one juicy target for the Anonymous group. They've gone after not just companies like Visa and Mastercard, but have attacked Sarah Palin and the Swedish government as well. They have said (as much as the loosely-knit organization can speak as a group) it would be "in bad taste" to ruin holiday shopping, however, so maybe Apple will spare the group's wrath, at least until after the season.

What do you think? Christmas weekend would appear to be an ideal time, in order to monopolize the attention span of the media on an otherwise slow news day. Imagine Anonymous moving to take the iTunes store down on the day everyone is getting a new Mac, iPod, iPhone, iPad or an iTunes gift card. That would make for some major issues (for both Apple and app developers alike), without question. But again, Anonymous doesn't appear to want to frighten the average consumer, so maybe the iTunes store would be a little too close to home.

We'll have to wait and see what, if any, the response will be to Apple's removal of the app. Feel free to chime in and share your opinions on the issue in the comments below. Will Anonymous attack Apple? originally appeared on TUAW on Tue, 21 Dec 2010 15:15:00 EST.
