Apple-themed April Fools' day pranks through the years
If it wasn't apparent already, today is April Fools' day and Apple's 35th birthday. To celebrate this occasion, Network World has compiled a list of popular Apple-themed April Fools' jokes from the past. Some are from Apple employees and some from the news media, but almost all of them are entertaining.
The most famous joke involves Clarus the Dogcow. Created by Susan Kare, designer of the happy-faced Mac computer icon, the black and white dog-slash-bovine became an integral part of the Page Setup dialog box in early versions of Mac OS.
Discussion of the cow-like dog icon continued internally within Apple's Developer and Technical Support (DTS) group until one member, Mark "The Red" Harlan, let loose the dogcow and named it Clarus in an Apple Technical document released on April 1st, 1989. This off-the-cuff joke has taken on a life of its own and is now a part of Apple's pop culture history.

WWDC. It's like Christmas for OS X and iOS developers. Each year, they flock to San Francisco's Moscone Center, anxiously awaiting the pair of gifts that Apple annually bestows: the new iPhone, and a bundle of new features on which they'll build their next big thing.
If whispers and hearsay hold true, this year's WWDC will only feature the latter; the iPhone 5, says the rumor mill, won't be showing its face until Fall. Instead, this show is purportedly going to be all about iOS and OS X. While Apple doesn't come right out and say it, it's pretty safe to assume that by "iOS" they mean "iOS 5".
Given that we're writing about iOS on a regular basis and talking about it with readers and friends even more, we've got a pretty finely-tuned wishlist for iOS 5. We also happen to know that a heaping handful of Apple folk read TechCrunch regularly ? and with the feature lock stage of iOS 5's development cycle (wherein they absolutely refuse to add anything new and just focus on what they've already started) presumably riiiight around the corner, we figured there was no better time than now to put it out there.

Apple-backed rules prohibit electronics makers from buying minerals used to fund wars
Bloomberg reports that new rules have gone into effect which prohibit electronics makers from buying minerals that help fund wars in Central Africa. The Conflict-Free Smelter program specifically bars electronics makers like Apple and Intel from buying tungsten, tin ore, gold and coltan from Congo and neighboring countries unless mineral processors can prove purchases don't contribute to conflict in eastern Congo. The Electronic Industry Citizenship Coalition in Washington, D.C. and the Brussels-based Global E-Sustainability Initiative developed the regulations in conjunction with Apple, Intel and others in hopes to bring more ethical responsibility to the mining of materials used in everyday products like the iPhone and motherboards. However, while the new regulations take effect in America and Europe many Congo mines will seek out new buyers in Asia. On April 1, 1976, Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne (who 12 days later sold his share of the startup for a meager US$2,300) founded Apple Computer. As a newborn, Apple intended to sell low-cost, hand-manufactured microcomputer components to fellow members of the local Homebrew Computer Club. [Ron Wayne will be appearing on Fox Business News this afternoon at 3:30 pm to talk about his early Apple experiences. -Ed.]
Not satisfied with selling a few parts to a handful of enthusiasts, a persistent Steve Jobs pitched Apple's products to Paul Terrell, owner of a newly founded computer store in Mountain View, CA, called "Byte Shop." Calm before the Spirit storm
At some point after (don?t ask when!) the iPad 3G is actually in customers? hands, the first ?userland? jailbreak since firmware 1.x will be released by @comex. �It?s called ?Spirit? and was first demonstrated working on an iPad by @MuscleNerd within 24 hours of the iPad?s release on April 3.
Userland jailbreaks are more troublesome for Apple since they expose security weaknesses that exist even for non-jailbroken owners. �As such, Apple is likely to close them soon after they?re made public. One recent example of this is the SMS vulnerability exposed at Blackhat last summer. �Apple released new firmware to close that hole within a day.
The Spirit jailbreak is most useful for newer devices: iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G, and the iPads. �Unfortunately those devices are the same ones that Apple can prevent you from downgrading unless you?ve got a backup of your personalized SHSH blobs. �Unless you?ve backed up your SHSH blobs for vulnerable firmware versions, you?ll lose the ability to use the current Spirit jailbreak if you accidentally upgrade.
Please take the steps now to backup your SHSH blobs. �Use either Firmware Umbrella to create a local copy, or go through saurik?s server. �If you are getting an iPad 3G, it?s safest to backup your blobs using Firmware Umbrella, in case saurik?s server gets bogged down with requests.
Other things about Spirit that are useful to know:
Spirit is an untethered jailbreak.
Spirit works on all devices. �(However, the redsn0w and PwnageTool�flows will continue to work on those devices they?ve always worked on)
Spirit does not include a carrier unlock. �(Please don?t bug @comex�about that)
Spirit requires your device to be activated or hacktivated

In search of the perfect remote access app: TeamViewer
If you have multiple computers or have to provide support to a remote Mac or PC used by a family member or friend, or if you travel and need to contact your computer at home, you're a customer for some sort of remote access. There are lots of choices, both free and paid. I've tried many, like some of the varieties of VNC, and solutions like LogMeIn Ignition and RDM+. They have all worked, but I was looking for more.
After reading a review of TeamViewer by our Erica Sadun last fall, i decided to give it a try. For home/personal use, it's absolutely free. I was only using personally, so free sounded good. I installed it on my Mac, on a Windows laptop, and grabbed the iPhone and iPad clients. Each computer you want to contact needs to run a version of the TeamViewer app appropriate for the computer it's installed on. There are versions for Windows, Macs and Linux. With that done, you run the program and your shared machine is assigned an ID. A password will also be assigned, but you can choose your own.
Connecting to a remote computer is as easy as typing in the ID of that computer, and logging in with your password. In a couple of seconds you'll see the remote screen and some extra buttons that allow you to do file transfers, remote reboot a computer, and tune the connection by adjusting the quality and scaling of the remote display. You can also bring up a chat window if you are working with someone on the remote computer. The is no reason to have to fool with firewalls or chase changing IP addresses. TeamViewer just works. Sound is not supported on the Mac side. PC to PC, there is a VoIP chat and video option. These features are coming to the Mac version, but no dates.

Our beloved leader Victor has an entire comedy routine worked out about GPS apps. In his "Maps powered by Match.com" schtick, he jokes "I took a detour...and 10 years later we were married." In real life, iPhone nav apps can be just as funny as his stand-up.
Take yesterday. I was driving my daughter to an appointment across town, when Navigon started directing us in circles. Now, we are no stranger to Navigon oddities. I can't tell you the number of times that the app has had us turn off a perfectly straight road, and maneuver right, then left, then left, then right back to the same road we started on.

Angel Investors Counter Y Combinator Start Fund With New $100 Million Early Stage ?End Fund?
In a move reminiscent of AngelGate, Silicon Valley's top angel investors are banding together to counter what they're considering an existential threat. That threat? Start Fund, a new investment entity created by DST's Yuri Milner and Ron Conway's SV Angel. Start Fund shocked Silicon Valley in January when they announced that they'd offer every new Y Combinator startup $150,000, site unseen and without any due diligence.
Angel investors panicked, realizing that Start Fund would likely result in soaring valuations. Y Combinator startups were no longer cash strapped, and negotiating leverage moved dramatically in their favor. "Start Fund was created to take traditional angel investors out at the knees," said one such investor. "It's highly irresponsible to invest in companies you've never met, and there will be unintended consequences that could hurt Silicon Valley over the long run."
Top angel investors were already meeting regularly to align investment strategies to keep startup valuations down. The collusion involved an unspoken agreement (known as the "$4 million line") not to compete for deals but rather to let one angel lead a deal and set valuation and then that angel would let the others invest alongside them.

Apptitude Uses Facebook To Figure Out Which iPhone Apps Your Friends Are Using
Noisetoys, the creators of music discovery and promotion app Hitmaker have come out with another hit this week. In the same app-discover�space as Explor and Chomp, Apptidude is an iPhone app that shows you the iPhone apps that your friends have most likely downloaded, all based on their posts and Likes on Facebook.
"Quitely" launching in the app store this week, the app recommendation app is currently number 29 in the top free apps, most likely because it incorporates social elements and Facebook Connect as a way of gaging what's actually hot in the almost anti-social Apple app store, whose Top 25 lists leave much to be desired.

Good news for Australians: Apple drops iPod prices
Apple often charges more for products sold outside of the US, but with the Australian dollar coming over parity with the value of the US dollar (currently less than a four cent differential), the company has reduced Australian prices of the entire iPod line.
The 160 GB iPod classic was reduced A$ 30 from $329 to $299.
The 8 GB iPod touch was cut $30 from $289 to $259 and the 32 GB version was lowered $29 bringing it from $378 to $349. The 64 GB model was slashed a full $50 taking it from $499 to $449 which is the largest price decrease in the line. The smallest price decrease was only $4 lowering the iPod shuffle from $69 to $65.
The iPod nano 8 GB is down $20 from $199 to $179 and the 16 GB version was lowered only $10 from $229 to $219. Perhaps it's a slow seller in Australia.
I really hope that Apple has taken to heart the ebbs and flows of the US dollar as compared to other currencies and will follow suit in other countries.

OfficeDrop Raises $1 Million For Digital Filing And Scanning Software
Digital filing and scanning software OfficeDrop has raised $1 million in angel funding led by White Owl Capital.
OfficeDrop, a finalist in Amazon's startup challenge a few years back, offers a number of ways users can take paper documents and scan and manage these documents to be stored in the cloud. ScanDrop is a self-serve desktop scanning application for Windows and Macs. OfficeDrop also comes with a digital cloud filing system and OfficeDrop Paper to Go, an iPad application to manage, search and share documents from anywhere. Users can also use OfficeDrop's sail-in document scanning service to converts paper into Text Searchable PDF.

Google Increases Lead In Smartphone Market, But Verizon iPhone Wins February
comScore's February mobile report was released today, and it looks like good news for Google. Android increased its lead as the top mobile platform, growing 7 percentage points since November, and strengthening its top position with 33 percent market share.
Following behind Android is RIM, ranked second with 28.9 percent market share, and Apple with 25.2 percent. Microsoft and Palm rounded out the top five, with 7.7 percent and 2.8 percent, respectively.
In the big picture, the mobile numbers continue to impress. Over the last three months, an average of 234 million Americans (13 and older) used mobile devices. That's 75 percent of the population. Nearly 67 million of those mobile users were employing smartphones, representing a 13 percent rise from November. Smartphone usage only continues to grow, as you will remember that comScore's November report showed smartphone usage growing by 10 percent since the summer of '10.

How to enable Home Sharing on Mac and iOS devices
My wife and I both have an iPhone and a Mac. We also have an Apple TV in our living room. However, sharing our iTunes content (movies, music, books, apps, etc.) between these devices can be tricky, especially since we regularly hot swap our Macs and iPhones for general purposes, depending on whatever device is nearer.
Thankfully, Apple has made this a whole lot easier with Home Sharing, particularly with the latest version in iOS 4.3. Using the same Wi-Fi connection, Home Sharing allows you to share all the media on the iTunes libraries in your home with each other, and with your iOS devices.
Here's how to enable Home Sharing in your home.
First, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes on all the Macs in your home. Second, make sure you have the latest version of iOS on all the iOS devices in your home. Don't forget this includes your Apple TV if you have one.
Once you've done all the updates, go to iTunes and enable Home Sharing by simply clicking on Advanced > Turn on Home Sharing. You'll be prompted to enter your Apple ID (for complete instructions visit this Apple tutorial).
Now, enable Home Sharing on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad by tapping on Setting > iPod and entering the same Apple ID you used on your Mac under the Home Sharing heading (for complete instructions visit this Apple tutorial).
Make sure you also enable Home Sharing on your Apple TV by using the same Apple ID, too (for complete instructions visit this Apple tutorial).

Jailbreakme v2.0 was a great success, and it?s provided a nice leveling point for all jailbreakers and unlockers on all devices at firmware versions less than 4.0.2/3.2.2. �We hope that everybody ever interested in jailbreaks or unlocks was able to join in on the jailbreakme bonanza. �Those of you who had Cydia capture your SHSH blobs, or those of you who captured them locally, will always be able to benefit from the jailbreakme.com v2.0 release. Congratulations!
Now it?s a few weeks later, and Apple has closed the jailbreakme.com hole. �They?re shipping devices with FW 4.0.2/3.2.2, impervious to this particular jailbreak. �So now, people will begin to ask: will there be a jailbreak for devices that shipped with 4.0.2/3.2.2, out of the box?
No, there won?t be. �FW 4.0.2/3.2.2 was *only* released to fix the jailbreakme hole. �With FW 4.1 still in its beta stages, it makes no sense to escalate the ?cat & mouse? with Apple for FW updates that only fix the jailbreak holes. To quote WOPR, ?the only winning move is not to play?.

DIY Cloud: Two Hard Drives That Let You Access Files Anywhere
It has long been a dream of mine to connect a hard drive at home to the Internet. This dream, of late, has been deferred by the rise of cloud services like SugarSync and Dropbox but two hard drive manufacturers, Buffalo and Iomega, have come out with compelling devices that seem to finally allow home and home office users to get the benefits of cloud hosting with the safety of complete control over your data.
The two devices, the Buffalo CloudStor and the Iomega Home Media Network Hard Drive, come in multiple sizes and sit on your network. They are, for the most part, plug and play except for a quick port change for the Iomega drive. I've put them both together as their feature sets are similar in process but intrinsically different in performance.

Movie Studios Approve $30 Rental Plan, Theater Owners Mightily Upset
It must be an absolute nightmare being a Hollywood executive in 2011. Four big studios (20th Century Fox, Sony, Universal, and Warner Bros.) have announced plans to introduce a premium video-on-demand service, to debut on DirecTV next month as ?Home Premiere,? that will screen movies a mere 60 days after their theatrical debut. Renting such a movie will set you back $30. And if you think you're angry about that, just imagine how theater owners must feel.
AllThingsD already has a scenario where the $30 price tag probably isn't as high as you might initially think, particularly if you're trying to have a ?moment and daddy need to go to the movies alone for once? night. Once you pay for a baby-sitter, parking, movie tickets, a little popcorn and maybe a soda you're well past the $30 barrier.

Hey, your kids are probably going to spend a lot of time in Apple Stores in the future, so why not get them started early with the new PLAYMOBIL[TM] Apple Store Play Set? What?s in a name? �Well in the case of an HFS volume name on iOS, an untether exploit ? as the Chronic Dev Team revealed last week with an untether for the 4.2.1 jailbreak, which had previously been a tethered JB for most recent devices since 4.2.1?s release in November. �With their permission, we?ve incorporated their 4.2.1 ?feedface? untether into today?s PwnageTool 4.2. �This means iPhone unlockers can safely restore to a custom 4.2.1 pre-jailbroken IPSW and retain their current baseband and unlock. �PwnageTool also supports all the other 4.2.1 devices other than iPod touch 2G:

PwnageTool also includes two very recent improvements to the 4.2.1 JB: �iBooks was just fixed by @comex and @pushfix last night so that it works as intended on DRMed books, and the wifi problem on AppleTV 2G was fixed by @nitotv, @DHowett, and @saurik. �Both of these fixes will also be available in upcoming Cydia package updates, so if you?re already jailbroken you can wait for those updates rather than restore and jailbreak again.
The various components to the 4.2.1 untether (including a second exploit involving Mach-o headers) were worked out by 0naj, posixninja, and pod2g, and a nice writeup by 0naj is available on the wiki. The actual injection method uses geohot?s limerain exploit for most devices. �And even though 4.3 is just around the corner, the exploit used has already been closed in the latest 4.3 betas, so it made sense for the 4.2.1 untether to be released when it was. �It also appears that a security researcher named @i0n1c has a 4.3 untether ready for when Apple releases the final 4.3 FW, so it may not be a long wait at all with 4.3!

SHAttered iPod touch 4G
Those of you with Apple?s new iPod touch 4G, or those of you who bought another recent device after the jailbreakme.com exploit was closed, have probably heard about a brand new exploit called SHAtter. The exploit (and payload) was developed by @pod2g a few months after @p0sixninja of the Chronic Dev Team discovered the crash. That team is hard at work bringing you a brand new tool to make use of the exploit. It?s not the sort of thing that can be developed overnight so please be patient while waiting for any announcements from them.
In the meantime, we?ve put @pod2g?s exploit into a beta version of PwnageTool to test the waters. The SHAtter exploit was enough to convince the iPod touch 4G to restore to our custom IPSW. The successful result is shown below! �It?s all working: customized Preferences to show battery percentage, Cydia, root shell?the works!
Although PwnageTool was a useful first test of a full iPod 4G jailbreak via SHAtter, it?s really overkill compared to the faster tools being developed. Its main use in PwnageTool will be for those with iPhone4?s, to allow updates while preserving the baseband and ultrasn0w carrier unlock. In any event, this is another exciting time for iPhone and iPod touch users?the cat and mouse game continues!
UPDATE #1: �It?s looking like SHAtter is going to be the gift that keeps on giving. �Even though the new AppleTV isn?t yet in people?s homes, the firmware is available on Apple?s normal public distribution servers and SHAtter has been used to decrypt its keys! �The main filesystem (?Mojave8M89.K66OS?) key for 018-8609-066.dmg is:

If you?re familiar with vfdecrypt, you can use that key to decrypt the image and mount it. �If you do so, feel free to use the comments section to discuss what you discover there :) �(And of course, thanks @pod2g!)
UPDATE #2: �It?s confirmed?SHAtter can trick Apple?s new AppleTV 2G into restoring to a pre-jailbroken IPSW from PwnageTool too! � Literally the only UI application on the ATV is Lowtide.app, but now the window is open for jailbroken apps of all varieties. �(Just like the early iPhone days, the only�apps you?ll see on the AppleTV will be jailbroken ones). �In the meantime, here?s a video showing root access (via ssh) into Apple?s new product.

eBay Lands First Mobile Pre-Load Deal With Telefonica?s O2 UK Phones
eBay's mobile reach in Europe is about to expand exponentially. The e-commerce giant has just announced it first ever mobile pre-load deal with Telefonica, which will equip most smartphones and feature phones sold by the Telefonica via its O2 brand with eBay?s mobile app or a link to eBay?s mobile page pre-loaded.
The company says the deal will include most Android, Windows 7, Symbian and Bada devices sold by O2 in the UK over the next two years. Telefonica will actually work with device manufacturers to pre-install the application.

We?ve released a beta version of redsn0w for the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G at FW 4.1 or 4.0. �It uses the same pwnage2 DFU-mode exploit that we?ve been using since the 2.x days. �It does not include the SHAtter exploit developed by pod2g. �Nothing new is revealed to Apple with this jailbreak.
IF YOU USE THE ULTRASN0W UNLOCK, PLEASE WAIT FOR PWNAGETOOL TO SUPPORT 4.1. �DO NOT USE REDSN0W.��That?s because to use redsn0w at 4.1, you need to already have updated to official 4.1 from Apple. �If you do that, you lose the ultrasn0w unlock (possibly forever).
The Windows version needs further testing, so for now this is available only for Mac OS X x86. �The Windows version will come as soon as the bugs are ironed out.
Note: if you have an ?MC? model of the ipt2g, your 4.1 jailbreak will be tethered?sorry! �(Consider rolling back to a FW supported by jailbreakme.com or spiritjb.com)
