redsn0wier

We?ve released a beta version of redsn0w for the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G at FW 4.1 or 4.0. It uses the same pwnage2 DFU-mode exploit that we?ve been using since the 2.x days. It does not include the SHAtter exploit developed by pod2g. Nothing new is revealed to Apple with this jailbreak.
IF YOU USE THE ULTRASN0W UNLOCK, PLEASE WAIT FOR PWNAGETOOL TO SUPPORT 4.1. DO NOT USE REDSN0W.That?s because to use redsn0w at 4.1, you need to already have updated to official 4.1 from Apple. If you do that, you lose the ultrasn0w unlock (possibly forever).
The Windows version needs further testing, so for now this is available only for Mac OS X x86. The Windows version will come as soon as the bugs are ironed out.
Note: if you have an ?MC? model of the ipt2g, your 4.1 jailbreak will be tethered?sorry! (Consider rolling back to a FW supported by jailbreakme.com or spiritjb.com)
===== What devices, platforms, and FW versions are supported? =====
This BETA release supports:

iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G only (for now)
Mac OS X x86 and Windows only (for now)
4.1 or 4.0 firmware from Apple

===== How do I use it? =====
If you?ve already updated your device to 4.1 or 4.0, the next steps are:

Launch the beta redsn0w 0.9.6b1
Select your stock 4.1 or 4.0 ipsw (you?ve already used this to update your device to 4.1 or 4.0)
Select ?Install Cydia? and any of the other options shown above, then click ?Next?. Use DFU mode to install the jailbreak.

Note: If you choose to ?Enable battery percentage?, you actually toggle that off and onvia Settings->General->Usage.
===== Download links =====
Please do not directly link to these URLs because they?ll be changing according to bandwidth demands.

OS X(See our latest redsn0w post)

Windows(See our latest redsn0w post)

Update: Any Windows users seeing ?Waiting for reboot? for too long (more than 20 seconds or so), please try ?shaking? the JB process by unplugging then replugging your USB cable (while letting redsn0w continue to run). Also, try using a USB port ?closer? to your computer (as opposed to on your monitor or behind another hub). We?re still tweaking the Windows flow and so any feedback you can provide will help!

New Micro-VC Lool Launches in Israel. Can Better Mentoring Boost the Country?s Returns?

Israel has had an amazing track record of producing startups and raking in returns-- better than most countries many times its size. The problem is the returns have fallen off dramatically in the last ten years as industries Israel excelled at have become mature. Meanwhile, it's failed to generate many big consumer Web hits, aside from MyHeritage and a few others.

I've traveled to Israel several times and met dozens of entrepreneurs, investors and startup boosters. In my experience, there are generally two kinds of Israelis: Those who blindly talk up everything Israel, going rabid if you dare point out the obvious decline in returns, and those who have a clear grasp of the country's strengths and weaknesses and actively play to the strengths to combat the weaknesses.

Yaniv Golan and Avichay Nissenbaum are the latter.

Valve Makes More Money Per Employee Than Google Or Apple

Here's an interesting figure: Valve makes more money per employee than Google or Apple. While we can easily figure out how much the publicly traded Google and Apple make per employee, estimating what Valve pulls in is trickier. Valve has done quite well selling video games - over 12 million copies of Half-Life 2 alone - but Valve is even better at selling everyone else's games - not just its own - in Steam.

With The NFC Wave About To Hit Shore, RFinity Raises Money To Make It Fast, Secure

Of all the interesting new tech that seems poised to garner a lot of buzz in 2011, near field communication (NFC), is probably the most exciting. If it takes off,it will transform theways wecommunicate, share, and make payments with digital devices. This will likely take years to happen, but the groundwork is being laid right now. AndRFinity is one of those companies at the forefront.

While Google and Apple are responsible for generating much of the buzz about NFC at the moment, the technology goes far beyond simply having the right type of chip in your mobile device. For example, how do you handle different types of data transfers being made from one device to another? And how to you ensure that they happen as quickly as possible? And most importantly, how do you ensure that they happen securely? Those are the things that RFinity is thinking about.

GreenPois0n jailbreak goes untethered for Apple TV

The Chronic Dev team of eager iOS hackers at GreenPois0n has announced an untethered jailbreak for the current Apple TV in the form of RC6 of the eponymous utility. This new build features contributions from the NitoTV team to enable the tetherless feature.
Up until RC6, most iOS 4.2 jailbreak tools for Apple TV performed a tethered jailbreak, meaning you would have to connect your device to your Mac or PC on reboot to get it to start up properly. While this wasn't a huge issue with the ATV (you could simply set it not to sleep), it could be a pain in the neck with iPhones and iPod touches if they lost all charge and needed to be restarted. Past revs of GreenPois0n added untethered JBs for the other devices, but this is the first build that will untether the ATV.
I successfully used Seas0nPass to jailbreak my ATV last week, but I may restore it back to normal to give GreenPois0n a try.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in. Clarified post to distinguish between ATV untethered jailbreak & other devices.GreenPois0n jailbreak goes untethered for Apple TV originally appeared on TUAW on Sat, 12 Feb 2011 19:30:00 EST. #MWC11 ? Twitter?s Dick Costolo Says Twitter Will Be Everywhere, On Every Device

Dick Costolo started off his speech at Mobile World Congress mentioning the fact that Twitter is very multi-platform, and how that's a huge advantage. He siad the goals going forward were that Twitter should be instantly useful and highly mainstream. Right now the experiences are dis-similar between devices, but the "experience should be the same. I shouldn't think how to use Twitter." In addition he said Twitter wanted to be always present - such as not having to switch applications just to tweet.

"We used to create experiences for our users but now users are creating experiences for each-other." He cited special initiatives Twitter did with Haiti not because there was commercial benefit, but because it created value for the users. DigitaCell Haiti had proved to be the most effective promoter of Twitter during the earthquakes because it helped the aid initiative.

A Tweet which embodied a mission for the company talked about ChoppedOnion who had done their shopping and commented on the sunset. It's that kind of simplicity and personal connection which is effectively the life-blood of Twitter.

He also revealed that 40% of all tweets are created on mobile devices. 50% of active users are active on more than one platform.

Say goodbye to the long tail of product resellers, at least on the internet.

The 1980s and 1990s witnessed the slow death of the "mom and pop" general store, replaced by superstores like Walmart that sold everything from butter to guns. Regardless of one's position on this trend, it makes classic economic sense: by buying in bulk, Walmart commands better prices with suppliers, and then passes on lower prices to consumers.

EFI adds AirPrint to corporate copiers and printers

AirPrint is wonderful for those of us who can use it to print to home printers, but until now, the technology has been useless for most corporate copier / printers. That's all set to change now that EFI is providing support for AirPrint to its signature Fiery print servers.
The PrintMe Connect software enables direct wireless printing from any iOS 4.2 mobile device. The software is free to download, and it works for printing to any Fiery-driven printer. According to EFI, "It is a software application that runs as a proxy on a Windows system to enable AirPrint printing for Fiery-driven printers with System 8/8e or later software version." AppleInsider notes that PrintMe Connect expands AirPrint to work with large format, high end and multifunction printers in the enterprise, and that there are more than 250,000 printers in corporate offices that will benefit from this free update.
Up to this point, only HP has announced printers that are officially supported by AirPrint, so it's exciting to see that the iOS printing standard is now making it to the big leagues with EFI. Do you work in an office where your print jobs are routed through a Fiery print server? Let us know if your corporation allows you to use PrintMe Connect for printing from your iOS device.

Bloomberg: Apple prepping cheaper phones?

Rumors of a smaller, cheaper iPhone are definitely not new and have floated around for nearly the life of the device. But Bloomberg has an article out today saying that Steve Jobs, despite being out on medical leave, is involved in strategic decisions involving a smaller, cheaper, more universal iPhone. Bloomberg quotes its unnamed source by saying the new phone would retail for about $200, lose the contract, have a universal SIM card and be a third smaller than the current iPhone 4.

Bloomberg points out how Apple released the iPod mini at a time when iPod sales were rising, but the mini addressed a new market segment that couldn't afford the larger version. It makes sense for Apple to eventually expand into the "smaller, cheaper" phone market, if only to go toe-to-toe with the myriad Android handsets now flooding the market.Bloomberg: Apple prepping cheaper phones? originally appeared on TUAW on Thu, 10 Feb 2011 18:00:00 EST. all four one!

Around an hour ago the new version of the iPhone Operating System (now called ?iOS?) was released.
iOS 4 is a huge release for Apple with many many changes and those changes offer slick additional features.
These new features are being offered by Apple as a free upgrade to qualifying devices.
We are working hard on a release to our tools that will jailbreak your device (or give you iOS 4 via the jailbreak train) and provide you with a carrier unlock.
Until these tools are released you should hold off on updating your device until we have fully tested our tools with all the relevant devices.
If you rely on hacktivation or a carrier unlock (ultrasn0w) then you should not upgrade until we have fully tested and released our tools.
Don?t be tempted with unofficial PwnageTool/redsn0w bundles or releases, just check here or our team twitter for real time release information.
Remember, we risk our devices so you don?t have to (but this time anyone who has made a mistake upgrading their baseband firmware should be OK real soon ;) Now! :)

Update #1: redsn0w beta has been updated to hacktivate iOS 4.0 for iPhone3G (in addition to jailbreaking the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G). The download links for redsn0w are:
Mac OSX (x86)
Windows
For now, theredsn0w beta release supports only the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G at today?s 4.0. It?s still a beta, so you?ll need to let Cydia reorganize, reload, and update after using redsn0w.
Update #2: There?s a new redsn0w beta (links were changed above) that should fix any iBooks problems people were seeing. Just run this new version 0.9.5b5-4 and deselect Cydia (you don?t want to reinstall Cydia over itself).
Update #3: Remember, there are scammers everywhere in the iPhone scene. The latest one involves something called ?ClawPack?. Avoid this costly, untested, and certainly unendorsed ripoff of our free software.
Update #4:There?s a new redsn0w beta (links were changed above) thatshould fix any APN or MMS issues that users were seeing. It?s safe to re-run it on an already jailbroken iPhone without restoring?just deselect ?Install Cydia? if you do that.

10 Reasons To Buy A Tablet (And 5 Reasons Not To)

You've held out for months, waiting and watching the market for some sign of a tablet that you think you'd like. But maybe you're asking the wrong question. Instead of "Which tablet should I buy?" maybe you should be asking why you need a tablet in the first place?

We've written out a brief guide to deciding whether you need a tablet at all. As for a recommendation, the two devices we can unequivocally recommend right now are the iPad and, if you're into Android, the Galaxy Tab (although there is some talk of an upgrade coming soon). However, don't buy right now. The iPad 2 is on its way and the Xoom, Playbook, and TouchPad, are coming soon as well.

So before you break out the credit card, let's talk about a few reasons to buy a tablet... and a few reasons not to.

AT&T iPhone customers: go grab your free 1000 minutes

Loyal AT&T iPhone customer? AT&T wants to say thank you to iPhone owners by sending you 1000 free rollover minutes. All you have to do is text.

We first heard about this free 1000 minutes deal earlier today but declined to post because we weren't sure that AT&T really was offering it to all customers. We sent an e-mail to AT&T PR and never heard back, but since 9to5Mac claims that AT&T has confirmed this is legitimate for all customers, here's the details of how to claim your minutes.

Hop in to your SMS app, and send off the message YES to 11113020 by March 31, 2011. Your account will be credited with 1000 bonus rollover minutes -- although it can take up to four weeks to process the offer. Enjoy!

Update: We contacted AT&T via Seth Bloom (blogger relations) to ensure this was legit and he said, "It's a valid text that some customers are getting. We've done it before, thanking customers."

iPads don't make you attractive to the opposite sex

Sorry to burst your bubble, iPad owners, but owning and using an iPad doesn't exactly make the opposite sex swoon, at least according to Retrevo 's Gadgetology Report. The report asked consumers if they notice other people's gadgets and, if so, how they react to them, and it turns out that seeing someone use an iPad is lower on the standard "I find you attractive" scale than seeing them with a pile of books. Only 36 percent of men are attracted to a woman because of her iPad, versus 42 percent liking a woman reading a book. As for the women, 29 percent like a man with an iPad, and 30 percent prefer book readers. Seems that traditional books really won't be going anywhere, even with all the popularity of the iPad.

With Valentine's Day coming up, it looks like you are going to have to try harder to impress your favorite somebody and do something other than just carry your iPad around in public. Maybe try making an edible iPhone cake, some iCupcakes or a chocolate-covered iPad instead? The possibilities are endless!iPads don't make you attractive to the opposite sex originally appeared on TUAW on Fri, 11 Feb 2011 10:00:00 EST. GE Acquires Tall Turbine Tech From Wind Tower Systems

General Electric (GE, NYSE: GE) announced today that it acquired technology from Wind Tower Systems, that can enable the company to build and ship wind energy equipment that's more efficient, taller and longer than what it offers now.

Longer wind turbine blades, generally, capture more energy from wind. Taller towers to accommodate these blades can be difficult to ship, install and keep steady in the field, however.

According to a GE press statement, the technology it acquired from Wind Tower Systems is "space frame tower system technology" for use at wind farm sites that...

The State of WordPress Security

The article How did WordPress win? has certainly been making its rounds the last two days, but all eyes seem to be (for the most part) on this comment by core developer Mark Jaquith, who sums up the state of WordPress security quite well. It sure is hard to avoid quoting the entire thing here, but here are a few key points: I haven’t seen an up-to-date WordPress install get directly exploited in around five years. Seriously. Every time I investigate a compromised WordPress install, it is either because they were running an old version (usually not just a little bit old, but really old), or because their web host was compromised. [...] When you’re paying $5 a month for hosting, three things will usually suffer: Stability, Security, and Support. [...] Two big priorities right now are: (a) making it super easy to stay up-to-date and (b) pushing web hosts [...]

Guitar Hero Didn?t Die A Natural Death, But Was Killed By Myopic Greed

Kudos to Activision for doing exactly what so many people had been predicting for years now. The world's biggest video game publisher said yesterday that it was going to ?disband Activision Publishing's Guitar Hero business unit,? citing a decline in interest in the music game genre. And what could possibly be the reason for that, hmm? Maybe releasing sequel after sequel after sequel in such a quick succession that you don't give gamers any room to breathe? Gotta maximize short-term profits! The future? That's someone else's problem.

iOS RSS reader NewsRack out now in Mac App Store

NewsRack, the popular iOS RSS feed reader, is now available for Mac OS X (10.6.6 or later) in the Mac App Store. The new version from omz:software offers syncing with Google Reader, drag and drop feed arrangement, tabbed browsing and thumbnail previews, just as any good feed reader should. It has been available on iOS devices for a while now (US$4.99), but the Mac version is now ready for download from the Mac App Store for $6.99.

There are numerous RSS feed readers already popular with OS X users that we have discussed here at TUAW, such as Reeder and NetNewsWire, and I myself am a Reeder fan on both my Mac and on my iPhone. Those of you still looking for that perfect reader might want to check out NewsRack, but I am not sure if I am willing to jump ship right now to a new app. However, it is always nice to have another solid option should I change my mind in the future.

Why native USB 3.0 for Mac won't happen

Mac Life has put together an interesting article on why we probably won't see USB 3.0 natively on the Mac. It's worth a read, but the long and short of it is this: Light Peak -- the ultra fast 10 Gbps, one size fits all (USB, Ethernet, FireWire, SATA and PCI Express) optical cable replacement that's been dangled before our eyes, but not made a reality, yet.

Light Peak was first demonstrated by Intel back in 2009 on a hackintosh running Mac OS X -- which ruffled a few feathers. At the time, Engadget reported that Apple was behind the technology, with discussions between the two companies developing the technology dating back to 2007, and that (according to an extremely reliable source) Light Peak would be introduced to the Mac line-up in the autumn of 2010 with iPhone implementation in 2011.

Since then, we've seen USB 3.0 come to market (to a small extent, and not natively on the Mac), but there's been no sign of Light Peak. Unfortunately, at the 2010 Intel Developer Forum, Electronista reported that the chip-maker said it didn't expect Light Peak to come to market until 2012 -- making its original "...maybe not next week, but soon" comment a little overly optimistic.

Regardless, and getting back to the Mac Life article, it's unlikely that we'll see Apple natively support USB 3.0 because Light Peak is on the horizon -- be that a distant one. In my humble opinion, with the slow adoption of USB 3.0, and its imminent obsoleteness with Light Peak around the corner, it wouldn't make sense for Apple to introduce a technology that's about to be replaced by a better one. As paradoxical as that might sound, Light Peak will not be an upgrade, it will change the way we connect peripherals to our computers, which is likely why it's worth the wait. Why native USB 3.0 for Mac won't happen originally appeared on TUAW on Wed, 09 Feb 2011 11:00:00 EST. Nearing A Million Users, Gowalla Moves Forward On The ?Social Atlas? Path

A few weeks ago, we noted that with a few subtle changes being made to their service, it seemed as if Gowalla was starting to connect the dots on travel. That is to say, it seems like they're starting to use all the of location information they have in ways beyond simply sharing where your friends are at any given time. Some changes being made today further connect those dots.

Gowalla has just rolled out a batch of updates to their website today that enhance usability when it comes to finding interesting things about a city. Venue (called "spots") activity, people view, and photos are all now easier to see. The mapping feature is improved. And it's easier to share and bookmark spots. But the biggest additions come by way of the Highlights feature.

iPad cutting board chopped down by Apple

Apple has pulled the plug on a cutting board designed to look like the iPad, according to the board's creator on his blog. Dean Kaplan had a lot of success with his iPhone and iPad stencils, and thought it would be clever to make a cutting board shaped like Apple's magical and revolutionary device. Unfortunately, Apple's lawyers came down on him a few months back, claiming that the wooden board's "likeness" to a certain electronic tablet was a problem. He thinks the whole thing's a little silly (and he's right -- no one's going to confuse a cutting board for an actual iPad), but he's not willing to test the waters with Apple's law sharks swimming around.

Apple has a history of shutting down products like this -- they also shut down the charming little eiPott, an iPod-shaped egg dish from Germany. There's probably more room for products like this than the creators allow Apple to claim, but then again, there's certainly a market for fake Apple devices. After the trouble they've had so far, Apple is probably being overly careful about just where its designs and "likenesses" are used.

iBooks gets an update for iPhone/iPad

Apple's ebook reader for iOS, iBooks, received an update today to version 1.2.1.
The update provides a few very important changes. The first, and perhaps the most welcome change, is that stability and performance of the app has been improved. I was able to verify this in many places -- just waiting for books to appear on the iBooks bookshelves used to take about 20 seconds on my iPhone 4, and that time has been reduced to about 5 seconds. Books also seem to open faster, and there's no lag when swiping through pages.
All of the previous updates listed in the update notes were there in version 1.2, including the availability of illustrated books, creating personal Collections, printing PDF documents and notes via AirPrint, and automatic hyphenation of documents.
The update can be installed immediately from the App Store app on your favorite iOS devices.

Stealth Startup Bubbli Raises Funding, Wants To Create A New Kind Of Photograph

Smartphones with built-in cameras have sparked a wave of hot startups focused on photos, including Path, picplz, and Instagram. But Bubbli, a new startup that's currently in stealth, has some plans that sound even more ambitious: it wants to use camera phones to create a new kind of photograph. The startup has just closed around $2 million in funding in a round led by August Capital, and it plans to soft launch at TED in the beginning of March (they'll be presenting on stage).

So what exactly does Bubbli mean when they say they want to reinvent photos? You've got me ?the startup says it wants to "bring the real world to the flat web", by capturing places instead of just a rectangular image. It sounds like it could be a sort of panoramic photo, possibly with an augmented reality layer on top, but at this point the company isn't talking.

Soon, you'll be able to set up your new baby and start entering the strange and wonderful world of Verizon iPhone use. TUAW is here to help you.

Many of you already own iPods or iPads, and know the ins and outs of iOS use. For others, the Verizon iPhone may represent your first ever iOS device. Let's take a few minutes to go over the basics, point out a few key steps for new users, and recommend some apps to supercharge your new superphone.

What's iOS? It's the mobile operating system that Apple developed for its portable devices including the iPhone, the iPod and the iPad (also the current-generation black Apple TV). For your new iPhone, it's a touch-based OS. The screens of iPhones use the small electrical charges in your fingers to detect the position where you have touched; you drive your phone with fingertips instead of four-way buttons, scroll balls or a physical keyboard.

To connect your phone to your computer, your music, your videos and your apps, you're going to be using Apple's media and device management tool: iTunes. When Apple releases new versions of iOS, you can install those updates on your phone through iTunes -- unlike Android phones on Verizon, there are no over-the-air OS updates for the iPhone. iTunes is a not just a central hub for managing music libraries, it's the home manager for your new iPhone.Continue reading Verizon iPhone 101: What new owners need to know to get startedVerizon iPhone 101: What new owners need to know to get started originally appeared on TUAW on Mon, 07 Feb 2011 15:30:00 EST. Facebook Makes It Official: We Bought The Old Sun Campus In Menlo Park (And Don?t Forget We?re Hiring!)

Why has Facebook brought together big time press from Agence France, Bloomberg, ABC 7 and TechCrunch together here at Menlo Park City Hall? Because it's hiring, and it wants to announce it by purchasing a building.

David Ebersman, the CFO of Facebook and Menlo Park mayor Rich Klein made the announcement: As we previously reported, Facebook will be moving from the space it has leased on S. California Avenue and 1050 Page Mill Road in Palo Alto into Sun Microsystems' old headquarters, an 11 building, 57 acre, 1 million square foot property on the Bayfront Expressway in Menlo Park.

Static FBML Browser / User Agent Detection with the fb:user-agent FBML Tag

As with general Web coding, when dealing with CSS and Static FBML, you have to take into account how different browsers render your HTML and CSS, particularly with Internet Explorer. Because you can't put the standard browser-detection scripts in your Static FBML box, as those methods require access to the <head /> tag, how can [...]

It's a trap!

Today you?ll likely start seeing iTunes innocently offer you a new version of iOS?version 4.1. Don?t accept it?it?s a trap!

This time of year there are lots of new iPhone owners, and not everybody knows that accepting new iOS updates is the surest way to lose your jailbreak and/or unlock. While those of you who have Cydia or TinyUmbrella backups of your FW hashes will always be able to get back to 4.0.1 if you make this mistake, this doesn?t hold for unlockers. There?s currently no known way to revert your baseband ? if you update your baseband you?ll lose the ultrasn0w unlock, possible forever.
Please stay away from this 4.1 release until a safe jailbreak procedure (which also preserves ultrasn0w) is developed and released.
P.S. There are a tiny number of iPhone3G owners who can revert their basebands due to a flaw in very early bootloaders?you will already know if you fit in this category!

iControlPad, the physical controller for your iPhone, finally available for order

At long last, the iControlPad for iPhone is finally available for order and it's shipping next week! We've had our eye on this thing since May of 2008, when an early prototype looked much different than the final product.

The iControlPad is a slide-on gaming attachment that clamps into place when attached to an iPhone, adding all the nifty gaming controllers that the cool kids want, like a D-Pad, buttons, analog nubs and two rear buttons. It also features upgradable firmware so new features can be added and a battery that can charge your iPhone via USB while playing. As Engadget notes, not all games are supported, so keep that in mind.

The iControlPad will cost you US$74.99. Last August we saw that only 3,000 units will be built in the first run, so get your order in.iControlPad, the physical controller for your iPhone, finally available for order originally appeared on TUAW on Tue, 08 Feb 2011 14:30:00 EST. Confession: A Roman Catholic App receives an imprimatur and your sins

I grew up Catholic and remember the nervousness of going to confession each week. Little iApps has created Confession: A Roman Catholic App that aims to remove some of the trepidation of those visits by logging your sins, tracking your prayers, offering a step-by-step guide to the sacrament and offer some religious guidance by way of an "examination of conscience." If you're worried about people seeing all the bad things you've been up to, there's also password-protection for your profiles. It happens to be the first iOS app to receive an imprimatur, which is essentially a blessing from the church to publish the app.
I spoke to one of the developers this afternoon and he informed me that Little iApps is donating a portion of the proceeds to various Catholic charities, so the $1.99 price is not just a way to get money from the devout iDevice users out there. I must admit it's an interesting approach to a centuries-old practice, and the interface is clean and simple (and tuned for iPhone or iPad, depending). It's designed to be used in and out of the confessional booth. If you are Catholic, it's likely worth a look. If you're Catholic and you sin frequently, well, just be sure you use that password.
[Due to the religious nature of this post we've turned off comments. Sorry, some folks can't be civil no matter how nicely we ask. - Ed.]
