The 1980s and 1990s witnessed the slow death of the "mom and pop" general store, replaced by superstores like Walmart that sold everything from butter to guns. �Regardless of one's position on this trend, it makes classic economic sense: by buying in bulk, Walmart commands better prices with suppliers, and then passes on lower prices to consumers.
