If it wasn't apparent already, today is April Fools' day and Apple's 35th birthday. To celebrate this occasion, Network World has compiled a list of popular Apple-themed April Fools' jokes from the past. Some are from Apple employees and some from the news media, but almost all of them are entertaining.

The most famous joke involves Clarus the Dogcow. Created by Susan Kare, designer of the happy-faced Mac computer icon, the black and white dog-slash-bovine became an integral part of the Page Setup dialog box in early versions of Mac OS.

Discussion of the cow-like dog icon continued internally within Apple's Developer and Technical Support (DTS) group until one member, Mark "The Red" Harlan, let loose the dogcow and named it Clarus in an Apple Technical document released on April 1st, 1989. This off-the-cuff joke has taken on a life of its own and is now a part of Apple's pop culture history.

Other notable April Fools' jokes include Macworld's 2004 "wicked fast", triple-CPU system called the PowerMac G5 Cubed or iFixit's genuinely clever 2010 teardown analysis of the Apple tablet, otherwise known as the Netwon MessagePad 2000. WWDC. It's like Christmas for OS X and iOS developers. Each year, they flock to San Francisco's Moscone Center, anxiously awaiting the pair of gifts that Apple annually bestows: the new iPhone, and a bundle of new features on which they'll build their next big thing.

If whispers and hearsay hold true, this year's WWDC will only feature the latter; the iPhone 5, says the rumor mill, won't be showing its face until Fall. Instead, this show is purportedly going to be all about iOS and OS X. While Apple doesn't come right out and say it, it's pretty safe to assume that by "iOS" they mean "iOS 5".

Given that we're writing about iOS on a regular basis and talking about it with readers and friends even more, we've got a pretty finely-tuned wishlist for iOS 5. Bloomberg reports that new rules have gone into effect which prohibit electronics makers from buying minerals that help fund wars in Central Africa. The Conflict-Free Smelter program specifically bars electronics makers like Apple and Intel from buying tungsten, tin ore, gold and coltan from Congo and neighboring countries unless mineral processors can prove purchases don't contribute to conflict in eastern Congo. The Electronic Industry Citizenship Coalition in Washington, D.C. and the Brussels-based Global E-Sustainability Initiative developed the regulations in conjunction with Apple, Intel and others in hopes to bring more ethical responsibility to the mining of materials used in everyday products like the iPhone and motherboards. However, while the new regulations take effect in America and Europe many Congo mines will seek out new buyers in Asia. It's no joke: Apple Inc. turns 35 today.

On April 1, 1976, Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne (who 12 days later sold his share of the startup for a meager US$2,300) founded Apple Computer. As a newborn, Apple intended to sell low-cost, hand-manufactured microcomputer components to fellow members of the local Homebrew Computer Club. [Ron Wayne will be appearing on Fox Business News this afternoon at 3:30 pm to talk about his early Apple experiences. -Ed.]

Not satisfied with selling a few parts to a handful of enthusiasts, a persistent Steve Jobs pitched Apple's products to Paul Terrell, owner of a newly founded computer store in Mountain View, CA, called "Byte Shop." After a few exposures to Jobs's reality distortion field, Terrell agreed to an order of fifty fully assembled Apple I personal computers from the infant company. Calm before the Spirit storm

At some point after (don?t ask when!) the iPad 3G is actually in customers? hands, the first ?userland? jailbreak since firmware 1.x will be released by @comex. �It?s called ?Spirit? and was first demonstrated working on an iPad by @MuscleNerd within 24 hours of the iPad?s release on April 3.
Userland jailbreaks are more troublesome for Apple since they expose security weaknesses that exist even for non-jailbroken owners. �As such, Apple is likely to close them soon after they?re made public. One recent example of this is the SMS vulnerability exposed at Blackhat last summer. �Apple released new firmware to close that hole within a day.
The Spirit jailbreak is most useful for newer devices: iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G, and the iPads. �Unfortunately those devices are the same ones that Apple can prevent you from downgrading unless you?ve got a backup of your personalized SHSH blobs. �Unless you?ve backed up your SHSH blobs for vulnerable firmware versions, you?ll lose the ability to use the current Spirit jailbreak if you accidentally upgrade.
Please take the steps now to backup your SHSH blobs. �Use either Firmware Umbrella to create a local copy, or go through saurik?s server. �If you are getting an iPad 3G, it?s safest to backup your blobs using Firmware Umbrella, in case saurik?s server gets bogged down with requests.
Other things about Spirit that are useful to know:
Spirit is an untethered jailbreak.
Spirit works on all devices. �(However, the redsn0w and PwnageTool�flows will continue to work on those devices they?ve always worked on)
Spirit does not include a carrier unlock. �(Please don?t bug @comex�about that)
Spirit requires your device to be activated or hacktivated
Please make sure you have your SHSH blobs backed up! �While @comex has indicated he?s not going to release the very minute the iPad 3G is out, there?s no telling what Apple might do anyway.
Update Friday, Apr 30:
As expected, the iPad 3G is equally vulnerable to @comex?s Spirit JB, as demonstrated below on MuscleNerd?s device soon after it arrived by FedEx on the iPad 3G release day.

Before even running Spirit, however, a backup of that iPad 3G?s blobs was made. �Even though he already had blobs for his iPad Wifi, they can?t be used on the iPad 3G (or any other iPad Wifi or other device for that matter). Blobs are unique per-device, per-firmware.

If you have multiple computers or have to provide support to a remote Mac or PC used by a family member or friend, or if you travel and need to contact your computer at home, you're a customer for some sort of remote access. There are lots of choices, both free and paid. I've tried many, like some of the varieties of VNC, and solutions like LogMeIn Ignition and RDM+. They have all worked, but I was looking for more.

After reading a review of TeamViewer by our Erica Sadun last fall, i decided to give it a try. For home/personal use, it's absolutely free. I was only using personally, so free sounded good. I installed it on my Mac, on a Windows laptop, and grabbed the iPhone and iPad clients. Each computer you want to contact needs to run a version of the TeamViewer app appropriate for the computer it's installed on. There are versions for Windows, Macs and Linux. With that done, you run the program and your shared machine is assigned an ID. A password will also be assigned, but you can choose your own.

Connecting to a remote computer is as easy as typing in the ID of that computer, and logging in with your password. In a couple of seconds you'll see the remote screen and some extra buttons that allow you to do file transfers, remote reboot a computer, and tune the connection by adjusting the quality and scaling of the remote display. You can also bring up a chat window if you are working with someone on the remote computer. The is no reason to have to fool with firewalls or chase changing IP addresses. TeamViewer just works. Sound is not supported on the Mac side. PC to PC, there is a VoIP chat and video option. These features are coming to the Mac version, but no dates.

In a move reminiscent of AngelGate, Silicon Valley's top angel investors are banding together to counter what they're considering an existential threat. That threat? Start Fund, a new investment entity created by DST's Yuri Milner and Ron Conway's SV Angel. Start Fund shocked Silicon Valley in January when they announced that they'd offer every new Y Combinator startup $150,000, site unseen and without any due diligence.

Angel investors panicked, realizing that Start Fund would likely result in soaring valuations. Y Combinator startups were no longer cash strapped, and negotiating leverage moved dramatically in their favor. "Start Fund was created to take traditional angel investors out at the knees," said one such investor. "It's highly irresponsible to invest in companies you've never met, and there will be unintended consequences that could hurt Silicon Valley over the long run."

Top angel investors were already meeting regularly to align investment strategies to keep startup valuations down. The collusion involved an unspoken agreement (known as the "$4 million line") not to compete for deals but rather to let one angel lead a deal and set valuation and then that angel would let the others invest alongside them.

Good news for Australians: Apple drops iPod prices

Apple often charges more for products sold outside of the US, but with the Australian dollar coming over parity with the value of the US dollar (currently less than a four cent differential), the company has reduced Australian prices of the entire iPod line.

The 160 GB iPod classic was reduced A$ 30 from $329 to $299.

The 8 GB iPod touch was cut $30 from $289 to $259 and the 32 GB version was lowered $29 bringing it from $378 to $349. The 64 GB model was slashed a full $50 taking it from $499 to $449 which is the largest price decrease in the line. The smallest price decrease was only $4 lowering the iPod shuffle from $69 to $65.

The iPod nano 8 GB is down $20 from $199 to $179 and the 16 GB version was lowered only $10 from $229 to $219. Perhaps it's a slow seller in Australia.

I really hope that Apple has taken to heart the ebbs and flows of the US dollar as compared to other currencies and will follow suit in other countries.

Google Increases Lead In Smartphone Market, But Verizon iPhone Wins February

comScore's February mobile report was released today, and it looks like good news for Google. Android increased its lead as the top mobile platform, growing 7 percentage points since November, and strengthening its top position with 33 percent market share.

Following behind Android is RIM, ranked second with 28.9 percent market share, and Apple with 25.2 percent. Microsoft and Palm rounded out the top five, with 7.7 percent and 2.8 percent, respectively.

In the big picture, the mobile numbers continue to impress. Over the last three months, an average of 234 million Americans (13 and older) used mobile devices. That's 75 percent of the population. Nearly 67 million of those mobile users were employing smartphones, representing a 13 percent rise from November. Smartphone usage only continues to grow, as you will remember that comScore's November report showed smartphone usage growing by 10 percent since the summer of '10.

How to enable Home Sharing on Mac and iOS devices

My wife and I both have an iPhone and a Mac. We also have an Apple TV in our living room. However, sharing our iTunes content (movies, music, books, apps, etc.) between these devices can be tricky, especially since we regularly hot swap our Macs and iPhones for general purposes, depending on whatever device is nearer.

Thankfully, Apple has made this a whole lot easier with Home Sharing, particularly with the latest version in iOS 4.3. Using the same Wi-Fi connection, Home Sharing allows you to share all the media on the iTunes libraries in your home with each other, and with your iOS devices.

Here's how to enable Home Sharing in your home.

First, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes on all the Macs in your home. Second, make sure you have the latest version of iOS on all the iOS devices in your home. Don't forget this includes your Apple TV if you have one.

Once you've done all the updates, go to iTunes and enable Home Sharing by simply clicking on Advanced > Turn on Home Sharing. You'll be prompted to enter your Apple ID (for complete instructions visit this Apple tutorial).

Now, enable Home Sharing on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad by tapping on Setting > iPod and entering the same Apple ID you used on your Mac under the Home Sharing heading (for complete instructions visit this Apple tutorial).

Make sure you also enable Home Sharing on your Apple TV by using the same Apple ID, too (for complete instructions visit this Apple tutorial).

Jailbreakme v2.0 was a great success, and it?s provided a nice leveling point for all jailbreakers and unlockers on all devices at firmware versions less than 4.0.2/3.2.2. �We hope that everybody ever interested in jailbreaks or unlocks was able to join in on the jailbreakme bonanza. �Those of you who had Cydia capture your SHSH blobs, or those of you who captured them locally, will always be able to benefit from the jailbreakme.com v2.0 release. Congratulations!
Now it?s a few weeks later, and Apple has closed the jailbreakme.com hole. �They?re shipping devices with FW 4.0.2/3.2.2, impervious to this particular jailbreak. �So now, people will begin to ask: will there be a jailbreak for devices that shipped with 4.0.2/3.2.2, out of the box?
No, there won?t be. �FW 4.0.2/3.2.2 was *only* released to fix the jailbreakme hole. �With FW 4.1 still in its beta stages, it makes no sense to escalate the ?cat & mouse? with Apple for FW updates that only fix the jailbreak holes. To quote WOPR, ?the only winning move is not to play?.

If the cat & mouse game escalates too quickly, especially during beta FW periods, nobody but Apple benefits. �For this reason, there won?t be a 4.0.2/3.2.2 jailbreak specifically during the period where 4.0.2/3.2.2 is the latest public release. �At best, some future 4.1x FW jailbreak *may* be compatible with 4.0.2/3.2.2 (but don?t count on that).

It must be an absolute nightmare being a Hollywood executive in 2011. Four big studios (20th Century Fox, Sony, Universal, and Warner Bros.) have announced plans to introduce a premium video-on-demand service, to debut on DirecTV next month as ?Home Premiere,? that will screen movies a mere 60 days after their theatrical debut. Renting such a movie will set you back $30. And if you think you're angry about that, just imagine how theater owners must feel.

AllThingsD already has a scenario where the $30 price tag probably isn't as high as you might initially think, particularly if you're trying to have a ?moment and daddy need to go to the movies alone for once? night. Once you pay for a baby-sitter, parking, movie tickets, a little popcorn and maybe a soda you're well past the $30 barrier.

The studios made the announcement at an industry convention in Las Vegas. Oh: they never bothered to tell movie theater owners about this ahead of the big announcement.

What?s in a name? �Well in the case of an HFS volume name on iOS, an untether exploit ? as the Chronic Dev Team revealed last week with an untether for the 4.2.1 jailbreak, which had previously been a tethered JB for most recent devices since 4.2.1?s release in November. �With their permission, we?ve incorporated their 4.2.1 ?feedface? untether into today?s PwnageTool 4.2. �This means iPhone unlockers can safely restore to a custom 4.2.1 pre-jailbroken IPSW and retain their current baseband and unlock. �PwnageTool also supports all the other 4.2.1 devices other than iPod touch 2G:

PwnageTool also includes two very recent improvements to the 4.2.1 JB: �iBooks was just fixed by @comex and @pushfix last night so that it works as intended on DRMed books, and the wifi problem on AppleTV 2G was fixed by @nitotv, @DHowett, and @saurik. �Both of these fixes will also be available in upcoming Cydia package updates, so if you?re already jailbroken you can wait for those updates rather than restore and jailbreak again.
The various components to the 4.2.1 untether (including a second exploit involving Mach-o headers) were worked out by 0naj, posixninja, and pod2g, and a nice writeup by 0naj is available on the wiki. The actual injection method uses geohot?s limerain exploit for most devices. �And even though 4.3 is just around the corner, the exploit used has already been closed in the latest 4.3 betas, so it made sense for the 4.2.1 untether to be released when it was. �It also appears that a security researcher named @i0n1c has a 4.3 untether ready for when Apple releases the final 4.3 FW, so it may not be a long wait at all with 4.3!

Video game and software retailer Gamestop has acquired TechCrunch50 company Spawn Labs, a startup that develops game streaming technology. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. In addition, GameStop also announced the acquisition of game distribution platform Impulse, which is a division of software company Stardock.

Those of you with Apple?s new iPod touch 4G, or those of you who bought another recent device after the jailbreakme.com exploit was closed, have probably heard about a brand new exploit called SHAtter. The exploit (and payload) was developed by @pod2g a few months after @p0sixninja of the Chronic Dev Team discovered the crash. That team is hard at work bringing you a brand new tool to make use of the exploit. It?s not the sort of thing that can be developed overnight so please be patient while waiting for any announcements from them.
In the meantime, we?ve put @pod2g?s exploit into a beta version of PwnageTool to test the waters. The SHAtter exploit was enough to convince the iPod touch 4G to restore to our custom IPSW. The successful result is shown below! �It?s all working: customized Preferences to show battery percentage, Cydia, root shell?the works!

Although PwnageTool was a useful first test of a full iPod 4G jailbreak via SHAtter, it?s really overkill compared to the faster tools being developed. Its main use in PwnageTool will be for those with iPhone4?s, to allow updates while preserving the baseband and ultrasn0w carrier unlock. In any event, this is another exciting time for iPhone and iPod touch users?the cat and mouse game continues!
UPDATE #1: �It?s looking like SHAtter is going to be the gift that keeps on giving. �Even though the new AppleTV isn?t yet in people?s homes, the firmware is available on Apple?s normal public distribution servers and SHAtter has been used to decrypt its keys! �The main filesystem (?Mojave8M89.K66OS?) key for 018-8609-066.dmg is:

GreenPois0n jailbreak goes untethered for Apple TV

The Chronic Dev team of eager iOS hackers at GreenPois0n has announced an untethered jailbreak for the current Apple TV in the form of RC6 of the eponymous utility. This new build features contributions from the NitoTV team to enable the tetherless feature.
Up until RC6, most iOS 4.2 jailbreak tools for Apple TV performed a tethered jailbreak, meaning you would have to connect your device to your Mac or PC on reboot to get it to start up properly. While this wasn't a huge issue with the ATV (you could simply set it not to sleep), it could be a pain in the neck with iPhones and iPod touches if they lost all charge and needed to be restarted. Past revs of GreenPois0n added untethered JBs for the other devices, but this is the first build that will untether the ATV.
I successfully used Seas0nPass to jailbreak my ATV last week, but I may restore it back to normal to give GreenPois0n a try.

Dick Costolo started off his speech at Mobile World Congress mentioning the fact that Twitter is very multi-platform, and how that's a huge advantage. He siad the goals going forward were that Twitter should be instantly useful and highly mainstream. Right now the experiences are dis-similar between devices, but the "experience should be the same. I shouldn't think how to use Twitter." In addition he said Twitter wanted to be always present - such as not having to switch applications just to tweet.

"We used to create experiences for our users but now users are creating experiences for each-other." He cited special initiatives Twitter did with Haiti not because there was commercial benefit, but because it created value for the users. DigitaCell Haiti had proved to be the most effective promoter of Twitter during the earthquakes because it helped the aid initiative.

A Tweet which embodied a mission for the company talked about ChoppedOnion who had done their shopping and commented on the sunset. It's that kind of simplicity and personal connection which is effectively the life-blood of Twitter.

He also revealed that 40% of all tweets are created on mobile devices. 50% of active users are active on more than one platform.

I could share some great horror stories with you on my history with banks and credit cards. Some of it has admittedly been my fault but most of it is the ridiculous actions of banks. I wonder how these guys sleep at night… massive profits, bailouts, executive bonuses and ridiculous overage fees haven’t even budged them to improve their systems. EFI adds AirPrint to corporate copiers and printers

AirPrint is wonderful for those of us who can use it to print to home printers, but until now, the technology has been useless for most corporate copier / printers. That's all set to change now that EFI is providing support for AirPrint to its signature Fiery print servers.
The PrintMe Connect software enables direct wireless printing from any iOS 4.2 mobile device. The software is free to download, and it works for printing to any Fiery-driven printer. According to EFI, "It is a software application that runs as a proxy on a Windows system to enable AirPrint printing for Fiery-driven printers with System 8/8e or later software version." AppleInsider notes that PrintMe Connect expands AirPrint to work with large format, high end and multifunction printers in the enterprise, and that there are more than 250,000 printers in corporate offices that will benefit from this free update.
Up to this point, only HP has announced printers that are officially supported by AirPrint, so it's exciting to see that the iOS printing standard is now making it to the big leagues with EFI. Bloomberg: Apple prepping cheaper phones?

Rumors of a smaller, cheaper iPhone are definitely not new and have floated around for nearly the life of the device. But Bloomberg has an article out today saying that Steve Jobs, despite being out on medical leave, is involved in strategic decisions involving a smaller, cheaper, more universal iPhone. Bloomberg quotes its unnamed source by saying the new phone would retail for about $200, lose the contract, have a universal SIM card and be a third smaller than the current iPhone 4.

Bloomberg points out how Apple released the iPod mini at a time when iPod sales were rising, but the mini addressed a new market segment that couldn't afford the larger version. Around an hour ago the new version of the iPhone Operating System (now called ?iOS?) was released.
�iOS 4 is a huge release for Apple with many many changes and those changes offer slick additional features.
These new features are being offered by Apple as a free upgrade to qualifying devices.
We are working hard on a release to our tools that will jailbreak your device (or give you iOS 4 via the jailbreak train) and provide you with a carrier unlock.
Until these tools are released you should hold off on updating your device until we have fully tested our tools with all the relevant devices.
If you rely on hacktivation or a carrier unlock (ultrasn0w) then you should not �upgrade until we have fully tested and released our tools.
Don?t be tempted with unofficial PwnageTool/redsn0w bundles or releases, just check here or our team twitter for real time release information.
Remember, we risk our devices so you don?t have to (but this time anyone who has made a mistake upgrading their baseband firmware should be OK real soon ;) �Now! :)

Update #1: redsn0w beta has been updated to hacktivate iOS 4.0 for iPhone3G (in addition to jailbreaking the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G). � The download links for redsn0w are:

For now, the�redsn0w beta release supports only the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G at today?s 4.0. �It?s still a beta, so you?ll need to let Cydia reorganize, reload, and update after using redsn0w.
Update #2: There?s a new redsn0w beta (links were changed above) that should fix any iBooks problems people were seeing. �Just run this new version 0.9.5b5-4 and deselect Cydia (you don?t want to reinstall Cydia over itself).
Update #3: Remember, there are scammers everywhere in the iPhone scene. �The latest one involves something called ?ClawPack?. �Avoid this costly, untested, and certainly unendorsed ripoff of our free software.
Update #4:�There?s a new redsn0w beta (links were changed above) that�should fix any APN or MMS issues that users were seeing. It?s safe to re-run it on an already jailbroken iPhone without restoring?just deselect ?Install Cydia? if you do that.
